The Feathers of a Bird

Everyone is wearing a mask and plays a given role their whole life only to be accepted by a cruel society. Sometimes you have to put more than one mask just to keep living in a city of lies and betrayal and then call it "happiness". If you look closely, under the many layers you've built over years there's you, the real you; not just a character built by society. What if we didn't have to go this far? What if it's an easier way to reach the path of happiness? Take my hand and walk on the path of thorns and honey with me. If you do it I'll show you what's under my layer of masks. And perhaps, one day, you'd dare to show me what's under yours...

A void-less consciousness

The human body is fragile, complex and a pure mystery for some people. That's the reason we can't fully understand its structure, diseases or conditions. Although, that's a doctor's job to do; we, ourselves, need to know a little bit of it too, so we can't fall apart so easily.

Inside that complicated and twisted mind, at the moment, the two of them still held onto their hopes, dreams and convictions; fighting for what's supposed to be owned by only one person, a body. It's not that they want to fight or kill one another for such a thing, they just think they don't have a choice. Their point of view is that one has to be in control of it while the other should stay aside and watch from the prism of her thoughts, buried in a pitch black void, unconscious.

However these two are the type of person who only see in black and white, live or die; for them there was never a third option. They knew from the start that this would be no ordinary quarrel, one of them had to submit to the other. They just can't see that as different as they are they've still remained together; that they complete each other in a way that no one else could.

At some point, they are about to give up; as strong as their arguments can be, it gets tiring to constantly live in tension, both of them are in need of some sort of mental break.

-Why aren't you giving up?!?! It's for our own safety; screamed Dawn.

-Because I can't let you kill people just for such a stupid reason! yelled Zora in exhaustion.

- That's bullshit; I'm too tired for this, just wake up and do your thing. If that potato sack guy tries to kill you, don't come seeking for my help. I'll just rest assured that I could finally get rid of you with a minimum amount of effort.

- You're being as rude as in the past hours I see. At least you finally gave up on killing that guy; she mumbled relieved.

- And you're as stubborn and as childish as you were when your mom forbid you to go out. See, this is why you need my protection! You called for me, begged me to defend you, then turned against me after I pulled you from your misery; yelled Dawn trying to convince Zora into listening to her for once.

-How did you know I've always been this stubborn? Tell me; she demanded curiously.

-Because, I've been here from the very beginning; she said while turning away trying to hide the teary eyes.

- Then why do I have no memory of you until the birthday incident?

-You do, you just chose to lock those memories including myself away for years. You didn't tell me why, you just pushed me into the void and continued to live your life as if nothing happened. These past years I've been dormant; all I had was myself, my thoughts, my emotions. It's been a living nightmare living in your shadow, watching others dim your light, cause you harm, belittle you yet being unable to defend us. I can feel your pain; your needs and wants, I know them all. If you'd just let me do my job; she asked while looking back at her with remorseful eyes.

- Maybe it would've been better if I never reached out to you; confessed Zora as she everted Dawn's gaze.

-We've talked about this before, you called me that day for a reason. You can't run away from the truth, Zora; they made your life a living hell. I know that you want happy endings but this is real life, you can't solve problems with a few tears and apologies. You need to fight back if you truly want to survive this hell-scape; argued Dawn trying to get her point across.

-I don't want to fight back! I don't want to understand or remember useless memories! I don't want the truth nor will I ever accept your presence here. I don't want any of this! Leave; she shouted desperately while covering her ears as if Dawn spoke too loud.

-I would if I could but you destroyed the void completely. I can't create another one since I don't know how to; you're the one in charge of creating stuff, I'm here to smash things and have my share of consciousness. You're the reason I exist in the first place. If you really want me gone then I suggest you stop whining and actually work on fixing what you broke; reasoned Dawn with a collected tone.

- But you said you can make a change a while ago. You said you could do it in a split second; added Zora as she uncovered her ears.

-I lied to you. I can't do anything without you or your approval; I just wanted to give myself a sense of power, even if I actually have none. I just wanted to make you feel safe; confessed Dawn in an apologetic tone.

It's the first time Dawn actually spoke to her in a polite manner; no threats, no yelling, just a logical argument. Zora was surprised by that but still choose to stubbornly ignore her.

- When I wake up, I don't want to remember any of this nonsense. I bet you're not even real; she mumbled as the floor started to turn into a gooey mess and slowly started to swallow her whole. Dawn turned around and noticed the whole thing take place. Her expression changed drastically as she ran towards Zora, she looked frightened to death. She tried to reach out in desperation but it was far too late for that.

- What are you talking about? What's going on? Zora, don't leave me here! I don't want to be alone again; cried Dawn in frustration while trying to comprehend what was going on.

- I really hate myself; whispered Zora before being completely engulfed by the goo. She vanished and abandoned Dawn once again.

-Why, why, why?!?! Why did you do this, yelled Dawn as she fell on her knees.

Nothing compared to this wretched feeling of betrayal. Dawn felt an immense and overwhelming amount of guilt, fear, frustration and anger which turned into a river of tears. Perhaps she was not as inhumane and cold as we believed this whole time. Sure, she's a little impulsive and violent but she cares for Zora like no one else ever could. Perhaps she can relate to how Zora felt during the birthday incident ow; perhaps she'll learn what empathy is.

- I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. I promise I'll be good. Come back; she begged once more.

After some time, she stopped crying and took a deep breath. She slowly got up and started walking aimlessly through the maze of consciousness that Zora created. As she was wandering around she began to notice some strange cloud-like formations that were subtly changing their shape. At first, they seemed to be random but as you focused more they started to embody a multitude of memories, thought to be buried in the past. It didn't take long before a huge garden of memories formed around her; she observed each one of them with great interest then proceeded to continue exploring the new realm.
