The Feathers of a Bird

Everyone is wearing a mask and plays a given role their whole life only to be accepted by a cruel society. Sometimes you have to put more than one mask just to keep living in a city of lies and betrayal and then call it "happiness". If you look closely, under the many layers you've built over years there's you, the real you; not just a character built by society. What if we didn't have to go this far? What if it's an easier way to reach the path of happiness? Take my hand and walk on the path of thorns and honey with me. If you do it I'll show you what's under my layer of masks. And perhaps, one day, you'd dare to show me what's under yours...

A little escapade

Zora opened up her eyes slowly and looked straight at her hand, noticing it doesn't hurt as bad as she initially thought it would.

- It wasn't that bad, was it? stated Oliver with a warm smile on his face, sitting beside her at the edge of the bed.

- I'm sorry for making you treat my wounds again. I'm probably such a nuisance to you now, she sighed.

- Don't worry, treating people is my job. I'd be kinda useless if there would be no patients.

And I'm glad I can help you with this one. There are diseases and wounds that I can't treat, they require someone else, someone better at it than me. If you don't feel too weakened from the blood loss, we can go for a walk and also buy some more bandages for your hand, he suggested while putting back his tools in the medical kit.

- Okay. I'm feeling alright, I'm not nauseous or anything like that. I'm just going to change my clothes since I'm all covered in blood and -Then we can leave, she stated.

-Are you sure that you're feeling alright?

-Yes. See, I can move around freely without any problem, she proved him and moved around the room for a bit.

As she slowly left his room while actually looking quite pale she tought :" Oh God, I'm barely standing on my feet yet I agreed. What's wrong with me?!?!? Am I so desperate for attention since no one offered me any all these years?!?! I'm probably a wanted criminal and here I am agreeing to go out in public with this guy... a very handsome and kind guy, with a warm smile, melodic voice...wait, wait!! It can't be, I can't get attached to one random person that happened to be genuinely kind to me. I'm a mess and I know it. No one is going to truly accept my controversial nature just like that.

- Well he's definitely up to something. It can't be helped, we must get rid of him, Dawn kept sighing fake .

-What are you talking about. No! We aren't killing or torturing anyone, it's off limits. You want me to get into more trouble don't you?the girl asked in a judgmental way.

- I don't see the issue here. If he's dead you wouldn't act like a total dummy anymore because of him and I get to have my fun. Wouldn't that solve both of our problems?

- Whatever you're saying isn't going to change my mind. I already have a criminal record because of you, I don't want more problems than I already have thanks to your crazy destructive aura , she continued.

- You're such a killjoy. I never get to do anything fun, you're always in the way. I'm not talking to you anymore, she pouted like a little child would and kept quiet."

Zora reached her room and shut the door behind with a mild angered expression.

- I'm not a killjoy, she mumbled as she was searching through her clothes that were thrown anywhere else but not in the closet.

Yes, as you've noticed, she's very messy and would rather die than keep her room clean for more than a few days. That's the true Zora whom her family would've taken advantage of the poor girl's kindness for so many years. She's not a role model but she's very patient, determined and brave. She has yet to prove her abilities to the whole world and most importantly to herself...

Through all that organized mess she found something that could actually be put on with less effort for her injury and keep her safe from people's sharp eyes, an oversized grey hoodie with a pale green stripe on the left sleeve and some random deep blue jeans.

After putting on that outfit she took her old yet stylish backpack and went downstairs where Oliver has been waiting for her already dressed up .

-Oh you're ready faster than I thought. Shall we go now? he childishly smirked.

-What do you mean by that? I'm not a slow poke and I also don't really ....

She suddenly stopped and looked at this guy's clothes closely then realized that both of them were wearing the same outfit, except Oliver had an green oversized hoodie with a grey stripe on his right sleeve. It's just a pure coincidence that they had the same type of clothing right?

- You don't really... what? What are you trying to say? he questioned her.

- Never mind. It's nothing you should get worked up for, she continued trying to reach to the door faster wondering if he's also noticed the obvious pairing.

-Alright but you're forgetting something miss carrot head, he replied amused.

-What? I don't think I forgot anything, she asked clueless.

-So you're usually walking barefoot outside? I didn't know this is a trend nowadays, he snickered as he lifted a pair of shoes in front of her.

- Very funny ... So funny that I forgot to laugh. Give them back now. Or you'd prefer to have a fight with me instead? she questioned as she tried to reach to them.

He dodged her hand and proceeded to put his other hand on her head gently as she seemed rather confused by his action.

-What are you trying to do? Zora mumbled as she avoided to look him in the eye.

- I'm trying to figure out the same thing about you. Your wounds are so deep that you can't grab objects anymore, let alone put on some shoes. Are you trying to worsen the state you're in right now? he stared at the clueless being sitting in front of him.

- I.... I'm sorry. I really must be a nuisance to you right now, she then realized and felt her heart fill with guilt and the anxious thoughts started flooding her mind:" What a fool. You can't do anything right. But what should I have done? I can't simply burden people like I did back then. I'll be left behind. They'll get sick of"- Huh??? What are you- she tried to speak after noticing that Oliver got down on his knees and softly grabbed her foot.

- What are you looking at? I told you before you're not a nuisance so shush. There's no way I'm leaving you behind. You said you wanted to go out so that's what you're going to do. You've spent most of these days inside; either unconscious , either laying on your bed like a sloth. You're moving your ass outdoors today and you can't disagree or complain about it; that's final, he ordered with a very serious tone while tying Zora's shoes neatly.

On their way through the forest both of them kept quiet as if the silence would be a sacred ritual and they must not speak at all.

The truth is they're just embarrassed because a few moments ago, back at the old house, some sort of odd situation took place. Like one of those unfortunate moments from an anime if I could say so.

While Oliver was focused on tying the shoe laces, Zora became very flustered and due to the amount of blood loss she felt dizzy, lost her balance and was about fall. The odd turning of events is that in that moment this guy noticed and tried to catch her and so he did but since he was on his knees he ended up grabbing her by the butt not the waist.

The next moment he realized he became beet red and constantly apologized as Zora was even more flustered. Long story short these two idiots have been like this for 20 minutes now and haven't spoken a word to each other since then.

You might think that only Zora has been overthinking small details but that's not true Oliver is more of an over thinker than her:

-" Darn it! Now she's probably thinking I'm some sort of perverted guy with weird fetishes. And I don't blame her for that, that was a very weird way to prevent her from falling. That explains why she was also flustered before. It's not like having someone to grab your butt is an usual thing. I'm more of a mess than carrot head now, just perfect. Still I wonder if she noticed yet, it's a weird coincidence and maybe she's actually not bothered at all by the fact that we are matching. Is this what she meant by something that I shouldn't get worked up for?" he then slowly glanced at Zora confused by those words. She seemed calm and at ease as she was walking even tho her eyes were blank and had no spark of life like one of those porcelain dolls kept for display.

His curious glance turned into sadness the next second and wished he could've brought back that spark of joy he saw for only a few seconds this morning. It was as if nothing else was more important than making her happy this very moment.

The next thing we know is that they've reached to the village and blended in with the rest of the people walking down the alleyway.

- Oh Olly how much you've grown in these past years! a familiar voice exclaimed with sweetness.

- Hello Madam Yomardoel nice day isn't it? he responded politely.

- Yes yes such a nice day. Especially when you're out with such a beautiful girl am I right? You're even matching I see. Do your parents know about her youngman? she smiled at Zora and looked Oliver in the eyes mischievously.

- I'm sorry but I think you've got the wrong idea ma'am. This carrot head over here is my friend and we've matched clothes by coincidence, he answered as he looked a bit flustered.

- Oh, now I see how things are. You haven't told her about your feelings for her I suppose, she continued, having the same thoughts as before.

-No, I just- he stopped for a second to look behind at Zora who seemed a bit uneasy and kept on looking down at her feet.

- There's no lying to me you little prick. You're being too obvious just quit it and keep this beauty before someone else snatches her from you. And what's your name darling? Would you care for some tea later? Maybe telling me more about yourself? the old lady asked as she got closer and closer to Zora who couldn't really say a word and looked very uncomfortable.

-Oh look it's my grandma over there!Let's go and ask her what to buy!! he panicked, took Zora by the hand that wasn't hurt and disappeared from the old lady's eyes in a split second. He feared that this much pressure would force Dawn to come out in a very dangerous manner.

After running for a while he stopped and took a deep breath:

-You good there? he asked worried.

- Yeah. What about your grandmother ? she curiously questioned while catching a breath.

- Oh well she's not here.

-What do you mean by that? Didn't you say you just saw her? I don't get it.

-Oh well I lied. That was only an excuse I came up with on spot so we could run away. My grandparents are dead for years now. I just couldn't stand there and do nothing while you felt that uncomfortable. Oh sheesh I need to workout more, he groaned.

- Well thanks. You're not a good liar though, she commented.

- It still worked either way didn't it? We should hurry to get those bandages and do some grocery shopping afterwards, he reasoned.

- Yeah, you're right about that. I think we should get lots since I'm such a clumsy person and I always get into trouble.

- Don't worry I know that well enough. The drugstore is just right after that corner, just wait for me on that bench. The people there know me and they might be as nosy as that old lady from earlier. I'll be back in the blink of an eye, he reassured her.
