Helena remarked to Merrick as she moved to the head of the stairs. "I need to find something."

She could see by the daylight spilling through the windows. It was well past noon. There was little time left before the sun set and the moon would rise.

She carefully descended the stairs. "I don't want to waste precious time. You can find me in the library if you need anything." The old woman nodded her head towards Hildie. "The girl is competent and knows what to do while I am gone."

Merrick was puzzled by Helena's abrupt departure. He leaned his head over the banister, calling to her, "Does that mean you are going to help us?"
