5 Chapter Five

 It is actually three years now that Sam and Eve get married yet no sign of a child coming, they have both visited the doctor on several occasions but yet no change. Eve became so disturb and thought of how life would be for a child or if her husband suddenly changed.

    She remembers vividly when her mother in-law visited indirectly, talking to her to make her a grandmother before she died and telling her son to  start getting another woman very soon.

    This is the only challenge in my beautiful home since my husband and I got married. My life has changed completely. Now I am about to complete my education. He has helped us a lot, especially my friends who find it difficult to get admission, so how can I show my appreciation to those he has done,she thought. A hand tapped her shoulder sharply and she turned back to see who it was that saw it was her. She stood up and gave a warm hug.

 "Oh my dear, what are you thinking about?" he asked.

 "Nothing much,just kind of missing you,"she replied.

  Come here my baby,he carried her in his hands as she put her hand around his shoulder. Let me give you some love as he whispered to her while kissing her. She hopes her dreams will come true.

   Some minutes later,he looked into his wife's eyes as they were laying down in the bed.I know what you are thinking about,he said. But let me tell you something, everything is a matter of time,there is still more time for us. Please stop thinking, I love you,I cherish you and I can never marry any woman after you, it is you and no one else who keeps your mind at rest. Thank you very much my husband for loving me. We are bound to be one and no one can ever come in between us but I wish God will answer my prayers on time. I want to hold your baby because grandma is worried and I want you to be a father as soon as possible, she said.

  Later on that night they took their dinner and retired to bed.

  Jido villagers had gotten a new topic to talk about,at the market,at the church and even everywhere. It all started the day that the mother in-law came and was abusing Eve to give them a grandson or granddaughter,that she has brought her village witch which will never work on them,it wasn't a small qurael on that day all the neighbours came to see what was going on instead of finding a way for her to stop they also join only few came to her rescue.

  Since that day she has become a new topic of discussion in the village, nobody wants to be her friend again,she became depressed and frustrated,her husband is not even a helping matter because of his work he returns very late in night so he didn't know what was going on around.

   On a good Sunday after church service,he told his wife that they should visit his mother and she agreed. After a 45min drive they got to the house as they came down from the car. Some one saw her and was like that is the new witch in our village.'' The husband was shocked and turned to his wife.

   "What are they talking about,"he asked.

   "Honey I don't know,"she replied.

    "Okay fine let's go inside,"he said.

   "Inside where,"grandma shouted.

    "Mum, what's happening,"he asked.

    "I don't want a witch in my house,"grandma said.

   "What do you mean by a witch? She is my wife,"he replied.

   "What kind of wife is that,that can give birth to a child??"grandma asked.

  "Now I understand why ladies were pointing at my wife,"he said.

   "So you cannot answer me abi,if she doesn't give birth soon you are going to marry another woman whether you like it or not,"grandma replied.

   "Baby let's go home,"he said as he dragged his wife to the car and they drove off.

   "It's me you are walking out you will come back to meet here,"she said while entering inside.

  Upon getting home,he entered the house while his wife followed him. He pretended as if nothing had happened,he switched the television on and put his favourite channel which is NTA and was watching news while his wife went inside,dropped the things was holding, changed her wear into something light and lay down on the bed crying for God's intervention that insult is too much.

  Mr. Sam waited patiently for his wife to come out but never saw the green light,then he went to the kitchen and made something for them to eat. Since they break they haven't eaten anything because as a Christian it is advised to go to church with fasting so after service you can eat.

   One hour later, he was done cooking so he went to the room to call his wife but found her sleeping and the dry tears on her face. He stands for a while thinking of what to do whether to wake her or leave,due to the hunger he has to wake her by placing a kiss on her lip she responds by grabbing his lip back then she slowly opens her eyes and she sees him staring at her.

   He gently carried her to the sitting room where he served the food,he dropped her on the chair and fed her without uttering any word.She stared at him as he put the food in her and his mouth,a lot of things runs through her mind then she broke the silent by saying she is full up already, "okay my dear am sorry for everything that my mother said to you, you know that is how mothers are when they don't have a grandchild yet but I believe that God has not forgotten us,"he said. Thank you very much for being there for me. May my God continue to lift you high, bless your handwork and your family Amen.

   On a fateful day, Mr. Sam was in his office when he was told that a friend of his is here to see him which he ask to come in, it was a long time friend,they hug each other and exchange greetings,Mr. Sam asked his secretary to get him drinks as the continue to chat.

  Eve was at home on this day preparing to go to school when some of her friends came so that they could go together,as they were about to leave when two men came looking for her husband and she told them that he was not around.

   As they were chatting,the secretary came in with a bottle of soft drinks and biscuits cookies. She picked the opener and opened the drinks for the both of them. While he opened the cookies and poured them on a plate, the office fell silent some time before his friend asked about his wife and the children.

    She has not finished giving a reply when she heard a sound on her chick,it got her furious and ask who are they but got another one then she kept minute staring at them thinking of what to do but found herself been beaten up and her friends shouted for help but no one came to her rescue till they left.

   He looked at his friend with a sad expression and replied she is fine.

  Friend: what happened.

  Mr. Sam: Nothing just that we don't have children yet and have contacted some many doctors.

 Friend: What they say is wrong with you or her.

 Mr. Sam: They say nothing is wrong with us but it is going to take a longer time.

 Friend: This is serious too,I know your Mum won't be happy about it.

  Mr. Sam: Yes she is not happy about it and it is causing trouble,so what do you think we can do about it?

  Friend: That remains me,I have someone who is a gynaecologist in the nearby hospital.

  Mr. Sam: please one minute then he picked up the phone, hello baby.

  Eve Friends: (Shouting) please come to the hospital now your wife is there, please come.

  Mr. Sam: Okay am coming but what happened to her,he hung up the phone. Please wait for me and just be told that my wife was hospitalised.

  Friend: Calm down, we shall go together,where is your car because I can't allow you to drive on your own.

  Few minutes later they were in the hospital where the doctor said that she was still sleeping. He asked her friend what happened which she narrated but still did not believe his ears.

  After sometime,the nurse asked them to come in,Mr. Sam could not believe is eye,he saw his wife well beaten, injuries on her body, he knelt down near her with sympathy and wondering who would have done this to his wife then he asked her who did these to you?

"I don't know I only saw two men asking for you and it result to this,"she replied.
