Leander still heard. “Then why?”

“Some people are worth the trouble,” Julien said shortly, wanting the subject dropped.

Thankfully, Leander did just that, and contented himself with watching the patrons take their seats. He appeared thoughtful, but not resentful. Now Julien wanted desperately to know whether Leander’s opinion of him had changed, but wasn’t about to ask. Instead, he also focused his attention on the crowd, taking note of those who were taking note of them.

Finally, the house lights went down and the curtain rose on Semiramide. During their brief conversation in the coach, Julien had asked Leander if he was familiar with the legend of Semiramis of Babylon. Leander had admitted to having only the vaguest knowledge, so Julien had relayed it as it related to the opera.
