Chapter 22

“Before this I only had the printed words and my imagination to bring the play to life.”

“And how does this compare?”

“It doesn’t.” Leander laughed.

“Well worth the prospect of enduring more gossip, then?” Blackstone asked as he gazed out over the crowd.

The earl seemed to be implying more than he was actually saying, but Leander couldn’t tell if it was meant for him. “Gossip is a small price to pay.”

“I hope so,” Blackstone murmured cryptically, then rose. “I believe the second act is about to begin. I must return to my seat. No, no need,” he said when Leander moved to stand. “A pleasure speaking to you again, Dearborne.”

“For me as well.”

Blackstone left the box and Leander turned to face the stage again, awaiting the next act. When it began, he found that it wasn’t as easy to absorb himself in the play. Despite the drama on the stage, Leander’s thoughts continually turned to Blackstone.
