“Too quickly. I don’t know how I’m going to remember everyone I’ve met.”

“I don’t know why you would want to.”

Leander suspected Blackstone was right, but tried to be fair. “I’m sure there are many people I’ll be glad to know.”

“Have you met any yet?”

“Well…no.” Leander heard Blackstone chuckle and realized what he’d said. “I mean…I didn’t mean…”

“I take no offense,” Blackstone assured him.

“I’m glad, because truthfully this is the most interesting conversation I’ve had this evening.” Which was rather odd in itself, because they weren’t discussing anything significant.

Obviously, Blackstone felt the same way. “Really? My sympathies.” He sounded amused, but not scornful as Morleigh had—Leander still remembered his cousin’s disdainful tone. “I’m certain you will have the prospect for many more conversations after tonight. Plenty of people will be paying calls to extend personal invitations once it becomes known that is what is required to assure your presence.”
