The Demon Duke's Best Friend

Renia was just a tired, overworked server when she found a strange red book titled Drenuz Kingdom. Unfortunately, she never lived long enough to get home and read it. Her death wasn't her end though, as she now finds herself in a different world, in a Kingdom called Drenuz. She's not sure how or why, but she's determined to live freely in this new world.

It wasn't supposed to go this way...

'I'm so tired.' Renia thought as she walked home from work. Working in a busy restaurant is no joke. And since they had ran out of aprons, her shirt is a mess.

Someone passes her then, and she self-consciously tries to wipe off the mess to no avail. How embarrassing.

It just hasn't been a good week for her. Her car broke down so she had been biking to work, and then her bike got stolen from her work! What kinda bullshit is that? Cheap ass bike lock didn't do anything to prevent it…

God, she's hungry.

With that random thought, she decides to stop by the bookstore next to the intersection. They sell some really good muffins and drinks. Entering the bookstore, She makes a beeline for the cafe area to order. Once Renia gets the muffin and drink she starts for the door.

Hold on… When was the last time she was in a bookstore? Her eyes drift to the shelves. She's been so busy and stressed lately, maybe she should find something to read? She starts to wander the aisles instead, soon stopping in a random aisle. A red book cover catching her eye. The book had fallen off the shelf, lying face up near the center of the aisle.

Drenuz Kingdom. Haven't seen it before. In fact it seemed to be the only one of its kind here. She kneels down to pick it up and skim the pages. It seemed like her type of fantasy. She looked at the cover again, it seemed like an older book, the cover smooth like leather. It has whirls and elegant looking flowers engraved into it.

'I work hard, I can treat myself to a book.' Renia thinks to herself. At least it's not drugs, right?

Just carrying it made her feel happy for a change. Reaching the desk she sets it down, the clerk pauses, searching for a barcode before checking their inventory on the computer.

"Um… Five dollars." She estimates awkwardly. Renia blinks before nodding and paying for it, taking the bag before heading out.

"That was weird. I hope someone didn't drop it in there." She mutters making her way to a cross road.

Renia joins a mom and her hyper four year old that was dancing while singing itsy bitsy spider. Cute kid. He makes eye contact and gives a goofy grin that makes a chuckle leave Renia's chest. She spares a glance at his mom. The woman has a scowl on, glaring at her phone and typing aggressively on it before calling someone to go off on them. She walks a little bit away for a bit of privacy.

'Wait lady, don't leave your kid with me!' Seri thinks uneasily as the little boy stops dancing, looking up at her.

"D-do you know the… The 'pider song!?" He asks cheerfully.

"You mean the itsy bitsy spider song?" She asks awkwardly. He gives an enthusiastic nod at that. She guesses she can entertain him for a bit. She kneels down, putting her hands together like she used to in kindergarten and starts to sing the song while doing the hand motions for it. After a moment he joins in too, clumsily trying to mimic her, singing loudly off key.

A squeal of tires and loud crunch makes them jump and look over as a car flips over another falling towards them. Her body instinctively pushes the boy towards his mother. But that's all she could do. Then, there was darkness.
