THE DARKNESS BENEATH

We started off as nobodies with no purpose, money, family, or orphans. We were nothing to society. No one wanted us. Bullied, insulted, spat on. We were called filthy rats. My sister, Debby, and I had to fend for ourselves. We slept on the streets in the cold and ate leftovers thrown away by passers-by. Surely, the experience still haunts me. We are well off now. People bow to us and treat us like queens. They should have seen us then. I bet they would have done the same thing the others did. It’s been a journey, a sad and terrible journey. One thing I wouldn’t wish for anyone........

I LIKE YOU

"Game on? What is that supposed to mean?"

My mind was a mess. First, a fight, and now this. Who really was that girl in black and why does she look so familiar?

Eugene left the class in a fit rage. The girl in black had a smile on her face. She looked vicious which was scary.

"Good morning class," "Good morning Mr. Stanley" the class responded in a chorus. "There's someone I would like to introduce to you." the class was quiet. We all waited in anticipation. Mr. Stanley pulled his pair of big round spectacle down his nose and squinted his eyes as he looked in the direction of the lady in black.

"Ah.. I see you've already found a seat Miss Snow." He returned his spectacle back to its usual spot. As half of the class turned to follow his line of sight.

"Okay class, I would like to introduce you to our new transfer student, Miss Lucia Snow. Miss snow, welcome."

The class became noisy as there were whispers everywhere. I couldn't decipher was being said.

"Lord!!! another she devil for me to deal with." He said to himself pinching his nose.

"Alright Settle down everyone. Let's get to business. Anyways I hope you guys treat her well. I don't need any more chaos from you lot". "We will Mr. Stanley. We'll definitely be at our best behavior" and that was Joshua, causing a fit of laughter in the class.

"Ha- ha- ha very funny, Joshua. You better be if you don't want a fail in this course." "Oh no no no I surrender Mr. Stanley" he said with both hands up at shoulder level smiling.

The class went on smoothly after that, but I started getting the feeling I was being watched.

"Jake, meet me at our usual spot"

I heard Eugene say as he ended the call.

I was out of the lecture hall and was heading home. when I saw him. He turned around and saw me approaching.

I wanted to take this opportunity to apologize for leaving him back then when I was supposed to help him pick the books. Afterall it was my fault they got scattered and nervous or not, I felt bad about how I acted, but he got to me first.

"Come with me" "huh..... hey!!!" he pulled me by the wrist running towards the cafe. I was confused and wanted an explanation. For some reason even though I couldn't stand for myself when I was being pushed around, laughed at and bullied, it felt different with Eugene.

"Wh...why were we running? Is someone following you?" We were inside the cafe now and even though we didn't run that long I was slightly out of breath. I checked out the class window to see if he/ we were being followed.

"No. I... I mean..." he was stuttering. I raised a brow and stared at him with questioning eyes. I had never seen him this fidgety before. He always looked calm and collected. Come to think of it I had more encounter with him today than I could ever dream of.

I had several thoughts and imagination about how, we'd talk if it ever did happen. I went as far as to create scenes in my head, romantic ones at that. He was my crush after all. Yet who would have thought I'd scurried away from him on my first chance. What a wasted opportunity, and here we were again in my favorite cafe with him right before me, yet I was staring at him with questioning eyes forgetting the many times I had daydreamed about being in such close proximity with him.

He took a deep breath and closed his eyes, when he opened them again, he looked as calm as ever. It was jarring.

"Let's have a seat. there is something I need to tell you" For a second there I thought I was seeing things. How was he able to switch like that?

He pulled a chair for me to sit and went to the counter where Mr. Finley was. I looked in their direction and saw them staring at me. "Are they talking about me?" I asked myself but pushed that thought away thinking he might just be trying to get us something.

He did return with two cups of cappuccino in hand just the way I wanted it which I knew was the handy work of Mr. Finley since there was no way Eugene knew what I wanted, and that convinced me more.

"I'm sorry I startled you by pulling you along back there. I know I shouldn't have, but I wanted to, and truth told I don't regret it." I didn't know where this was going, but I was all ears.

I took a sip of the cappuccino, "I like you Rose"...
