CHAPTER10: CONQUEST OF POWER.

The morning after the terrible stormy night was permeated with a melancholy air. The sky was gray and heavy as if it still held the weight of the storm that had raged through the dark hours. The sunlight struggled to break through the thick clouds, and when it did, it cast a weak, feeble glow over the drenched earth.

The air was humid and thick with the scent of moisture, mixing with the smell of damp earth and leaves. The Kingdom of Heatherton and its street were littered with broken branches and debris, and the ground was slick with rainwater, making every step treacherous. Puddles were scattered throughout, reflecting the muted light of the sky like small mirrors.

The trees, now stripped of their leaves, stood forlornly, their branches reaching out as if to grope for something lost. They swayed in the light breeze, their bark slick with rainwater, revealing the scars of the brutal storm. Leaves and twigs clung tightly to the branches, as if afraid of falling again.

Despite the stillness of the morning, there was a sense of unrest that lingered. The birds were silent, perhaps still in shock from the raging storm, and not a soul could be seen moving about. The sky continued to threaten another bout of rain, and the air hung heavy with the weight of the previous night's destruction.

The Kingdom of Heatherton was situated in the western part of the country. A land of striking beauty and grandeur where nature and human creation intertwined. The vast and fertile lands of the kingdom extended over rolling hills, verdant valleys, and vast stretches of forests. Rivers flowed through the landscape, slicing through the hills to carve out deep gorges and valleys.

The kingdom's boundaries were defined by the rugged mountain range that encircled it, providing a natural fortification that was further strengthened by the kingdom's many castles and fortresses. These fortifications had been built across the centuries to protect the kingdom from invaders, and they stood as a testament to the enduring human spirit of the Heatherton people.

The kingdom was dotted with many small towns and villages where the peasants of people lived, worked, and raised their families. These towns and villages were bustling centers of commerce, where trade and goods flowed from one corner of the kingdom to another.

In contrast to these humble settlements, the kingdom's cities were bustling centers of culture and commerce, where the elite and influential made their homes. The cities were a hub of activity, with shops, restaurants, and theaters lining the streets. Towering cathedrals and palaces rose to the sky, their ornate facades speaking of the wealth and power of the privileged few.

But beneath the veneer of grandeur and wealth lay a bitter power struggle. The elites were divided into factions, each vying for control of the kingdom. These factions were constantly jockeying for position, trying to outmaneuver each other in a deadly game of politics.

The royal court was the center of this power struggle, and it was here that the most influential elites gathered to make their moves. They competed for the queen's favor, hoping to gain a foothold in the palace and secure their positions of power.

The air was thick with intrigue and secrets as rumors circulated about who was plotting against whom. The elite were constantly watching their backs, wary of the next move their rivals might make.

Amidst all the chaos, some sought to rise above the fray and bring about change. But they were few and far between, drowned out by the clamor of the elites who fought for power.

First and foremost, the mantle of power began under the leadership of the matriarch, Her Lordship, Queen Fallon Montgomery, a woman of power and dignity. Her authority began on her wedding night when she ascended to the throne following the mysterious death of the king, her late husband. At the young age of nineteen, she formed an alliance with the King's distant nephew, Viscount Archard Hendry, who was known for his striking appearance. Despite his charm, it was later revealed that the Viscount was corrupt and immoral. He engaged in numerous extramarital affairs, disregarding the reputation of his wife, the Queen, and causing a scandal within the court.

Even though she was already married to Viscount Archard Hendry, the woman made a daring decision to get engaged to Timothy Rilward, a Baron who captured her heart. However, her dream of a happy ending was shattered when she discovered that he too was a poor choice. Despite knowing this, she couldn't help but fall deeply in love with him. Instead of ending her second marriage, she made the questionable choice of marrying yet another wealthy man, a Count. Unfortunately, her decision only led to more misery, as this third husband was far worse than the two before him.

The scandal caused a serious rift within the royal court, and officials demanded a separation between Queen Fallon and her unfaithful husbands. However, unwilling to let go of her love for them, Queen Fallon resorted to a forbidden act. She engaged in relationships with other elite members of the court, creating a harem-like situation, and causing a power struggle within the court. Unknowingly, the Queen had inadvertently fueled a dangerous game of strategic alliances and rivalries in her desperate attempt to hold onto power and love.

The power struggle and strategic alliances that began with Queen Fallon continued to shape the dynasty of her descendants, giving rise to the powerful House of Loughty. The pursuit of power held such immense importance that other aspects of life and leadership took a back seat. The house fought relentlessly, making alliances and enemies, all in the bid to maintain and expand their power in the realm. The house quickly rose to become a formidable force, known for its unrelenting pursuit of power and influence.

---

In the earliest morning.

A young man entered a gate. He was draped in sumptuous robes of the finest silk, the fabric flowing and shimmering with every movement. Intricate designs and motifs adorned the fabric, woven with delicate threads of gold and silver. The patterns seemed to dance and weave together, conveying a sense of elegance and sophistication. A lavish fur cloak was draped over his broad shoulders, its soft, plush fur quality a symbol of his noble lineage and wealth.

As he entered the Estate of Loughty, his eyes widened at the grandeur and luxury of the surroundings. The entrance hall was a sight to behold, with high ceilings, a chandelier sparkling overhead, and walls adorned with paintings and tapestries. The intricate patterned carpets underfoot made walking a pleasure.

The young man continued to walk down the hallway, the sound of his boots against the polished wood echoing through the spacious room. He noticed doors leading to other rooms along the hallway, undoubtedly more opulent than the last.

When he finally arrived at the tall door, he composed himself and knocked politely. A deep voice from within the room bid him to come in, and the young man pushed the door open with trepidation.

As he walked in, his gaze was drawn towards the ornately carved wooden table in front of him. Illustrious armchairs surrounded it, and in the middle was a silver candelabra, casting a warm glow all around.

The young man quickly recognized the figure sitting at the table as the duke, a majestic man with piercing sapphire-blue eyes and a commanding presence. A smile crept across his face as he approached, and he bowed deeply.

"My lord, I am honored to be in your presence," the young man spoke, smoothly.

The duke nodded his head, acknowledging him with a small smile. "I have been expecting you, please take a seat," he said, pointing towards one of the plush armchairs around the table.

The young man relaxed a bit, taking a seat and shifting his weight in the soft seat.

The duke began speaking about the upcoming matters that they needed to deal with, and the young man listened intently, taking note of every word. They discussed politics, alliances, and trade, and the young man found himself still listening eagerly long after the meeting had ended.

As he stood to leave, the duke said, "Remember, I have high expectations from you, and we will be keeping a close eye."

The young man nodded, a sense of pride filling his chest at being given important responsibilities in the duke's estate. And with a final bow, he quickly turned and walked out of the room, his heart swelling with excitement and anticipation for what lay ahead.

Just as he stepped out of the room, feeling elated with his new role, he took a step back and saw a man with navy blue hair. Beads of sweat dripped down his forehead, and he recognized the man as the duke's right-hand man, Henry Becket.

Mr. Becket, the esquire, narrowed his eyes and cast a suspicious glance at the man residing out of the study room, but with the urgent call, he barely spared a second glance before hurrying inside the duke's study. Dismissing the man's presence, he was consumed with more pressing matters. Meanwhile, the man scowled in irritation at being ignored, before turning on his heel and striding away, his displeasure palpable.

Inside the study room.

"My Lord, I bring dire news," The esquire announced gravely. "After the long and exhaustive search, Lady Coretta's lifeless body has been discovered at last!" he continued. "I'm sorry to say that Lady Coretta has passed away," he said solemnly. "Her face and body are so badly disfigured that they are unrecognizable. There is no doubt about it - she is no longer with us."

A deafening hush descended upon the room, suffocating even the sound of breath. The air grew thick and oppressive, making the esquire's skin crawl. As the seconds stretched on like hours, the only audible sound was the incessant scribbling of pages. But then, abruptly, even that sound ceased. The duke regarded him with an inscrutable expression, his eyes hard and cold. "And how did HE take the news?" his voice was flat and emotionless, revealing nothing about his own feelings.

The esquire's breath caught in his throat, and he hesitated momentarily unsure how to answer. A thousand thoughts raced through his mind as he struggled to form a coherent response. In a sudden flash of comprehension, he realized that the duke was referring to his younger brother.

His voice barely above a whisper, he replied,

"My Lord, I overheard that the chief commander and his lieutenant personally entered the kingdom to reprimand him for his actions. They deemed his behavior disgraceful and took him back to the north forcefully."

"What were you doing when he entered the kingdom? I trusted you to be diligent in your duties, Henry. Unfortunately, it appears that this trust may have been misplaced. He is still as rash and inexperienced as he was before, and his presence in the kingdom is a threat to the peace and stability that we have worked so hard to maintain. I implore you to be more vigilant in the future and ensure that similar mistakes do not occur again. Failure to do so will result in a reevaluation of your contributions throughout the years and a potential revocation of your title. I hope this message has been made clear to you, Henry."

"Yes, my lord."
