Snowy Oklahoma

Owen’s eyes flutter open as he stretches across his bed, only to see the bedroom door open. The smell of food flows through the house as he hears the busy bustle of breakfast. He stretches in his bed as he sees Ash circle the corner of the room. Both of the boys make eye contact, and Ash briefly smiles before going to his bag. Terrance follows quickly behind Ash, laughing.

“So, what did you say the dish you made was?” Terrance looks at a paper Ash hands him. It has scribbles on it in Ash’s handwriting.

“Ontbijtkoek.” Ash chuckles at Terrance’s expression. “That’s a copy of my mother’s recipe.”

“How do you pronounce that?” Terrance looks at the paper and attempts to sound out the name of the dish.

“Ont-bet-cook is probably the easiest way you’ll be able to say it.” Ash laughs and watches the older man as he mouths the word and shrugs.

“That’s neat.” He down at Ash and smiles. “I’m gonna head back to the table. Thanks for the recipe!”
