Chapter 18

The duo went back into the forest.

They weren't actively searching for the werewolf. If it didn't show up, it was all the better. There was no need to engage in unnecessary combat.

And from the looks of it, they didn't attack the village.

Max continued walking fully alert, meanwhile Medb was skipping steps as she hummed a tune.

When they walked past the spot Max was attacked before did Max relax his guard slightly.

But Medb was disappointed. "How boring! Why isn't it attacking?! I could get some workout done that wa-" She didn't get to finish her sentence as Max kicked her on the butt and dodged the lunge of a werewolf.

"You jinxed it!"

"You hit my butt!"

"I saved your ass!"

"How vulgar!"

They argued as Medb grabbed her whip and Max projected Kanshou and Bakuya in his hands while engaging in combat with the werewolf.

"There is another one!" Medb yelled as a second werewolf appeared. "And another one!" Then a third appeared.

Max was busy blocking the attacks of the werewolf in front of him as he fired weapons made of silver towards the others.

They dodged the projectiles, one went to pincer Max and the other went for Medb.

She dodged the claws and striked with her whip. Whenever she hit the werewolf it whimpered in pain even though her whip wasn't made of silver.

"Yeah, you like that?" Medb said as she continued attacking. Normally her strikes were slow enough to be dodged by a werewolf but somehow, it always found its footing off.

Sometimes there would be deep puddles of water where it stepped and sometimes mud.

There was no sign of Medb using magic so it was an unnatural situation.

If someone looked from the side, they would see that Medb was toying with the werewolf with a smile on her face while Max was fighting with all he had against two werewolves. He was sweating bullets, making risky acrobatics, dodging, rolling, just to get away from the attacks of the werewolves.

He was covered in sweat and dirt from all the rolling, meanwhile Medb was as graceful as ever.

Finally Max managed to put some distance with himself and the werewolves through constant firing of weapons while covering his back and projected his bow and nocked an arrow.

He pulled the string and let loose instantly. He continued firing his arrows until he was out of ammo. But he managed to hit each werewolf at least once and that was enough.

He projected Kanshou and Bakuya once more and engaged in close combat once more.

This time, the werewolves slowed down significantly as the poison took effect.

He ducked under a large swing and cut open a large gash in the abdomen of a werewolf then rolled on the ground to dodge the other one.

He continued firing more swords at them even while dodging. 'It is starting to be taxing.' His circuits were starting to hurt from continuous use at full force but he didn't relent because he knew that victory was at hand.

Purplish green lines started appearing on the werewolves. They slowed down significantly. One even staggered while charging.

Max didn't miss his chance as he threw Kanshou while blocking an attack from the other one with Bakuya.

Kanshou cut the back of the werewolf open as it howled in pain and dropped on the ground.

The one engaged with Max was showing obvious signs of pain from all the cuts on its body together with poison.

Kanshou twirled in the air and then started flying back to Max.

Max who was waiting for this alined with the returning blade and the werewolf didn't notice it from all the pain and suffering it was feeling. And then, it stopped feeling anything altogether.

The returning Kanshou was now sticking on its back and was penetrated deep into its spine.

Max quickly finished it off and went to the other werewolf who was writhing in agony on the ground.

He fired a few weapons without getting too close as any creature was at its most dangerous when it was about to die.

But a sword that plunged deep into its head quickly finished it off too.

"Huff huff." He was panting in exhaustion and was about to slump on the ground when he remembered that he had someone else with him.

He turned his head to look at how Medb was doing when he saw her sitting on the corpse of a werewolf with her head on her hands, watching Max curiously.

"You? When?" Max asked in exasperation.

"It's been a while actually."

"Why didn't you help me then?"

"Why should I? You looked like you were handling it and I didn't want to tire myself." She replied matter of factly.

"You know, I don't like you."

"I'll blame that on your ignorance. Anyways, let's go?"

"…" Max started walking without uttering any more words.

The duo continued their travel for a few more day when they got caught under heavy downpour in the wilderness.

"Look a cave! How lucky!" Medb exclaimed.

During the time he was traveling with her, he got used to her absurd luck.

Whenever she wanted something, or needed something, it happened like it was natural. Like they were already about to find it even without her wish.

There was a situation that dumbfounded Max the most.

— Flashback two days ago —

The duo had just settled on the ground after walking for five hours. Max took out some beef jerky from his bag and gave the half to Medb.

"I'm sick of eating this!" She protested.

"Don't complain. We could've eaten much better food if we could hunt a game but there are no animals in our surroundings."

"Still!! I want some good food!"

"There is nothing I can d-" he couldn't finish his sentence as a wafting aroma entered his nostrils.

*Sniff *Sniff "What is that?" Medb followed the scent as they came upon a deserted camp.

There were no signs of the owners and from the looks of it, the camp was deserted a long time ago.

But, the scent of the freshly cooked food filled the air.

"How lucky!" Medb exclaimed and immediately gorged herself in the food without checking it was poisoned or not. "Thish ish sho good!!" She said excitedly while stuffing her mouth.

Upon seeing that nothing happened to her, Max also took a bite and felt like his clothes were about to rip from the overwhelming taste that tickled his taste buds.

The question of how the food appeared there flew from his mind at that moment.
