Let me be your drug

Anna was wrapped in a profound sleep on the king size bed curled up at its edge. Regan saw her and sighed. He knew she was still not comfortable with the idea of sharing the same bed and so, she went to sleep before he came from the shower. It was the last thing he wished for her. He didn't want her to feel conscious about anything around him. He knew the fact that she still needed a lot of time to accept their relationship and he was willing to give her whatever she wanted. However, the situations were not helping him to do so. The incident with the car was still fresh in his mind along with her eyes that were filled with terror. The things going around them were neither helping him to keep his promises that he had silently made to her nor he was capable of staying away from her after getting so close.

The memories of the past few days with her brought a contented smile on his face. A few months back if someone had told him that he would be happily married in the near future, that too to such an innocent soul, he would have laughed hard taking it as a joke. But now, here he was, taking in the appearance of his love who was his wife now.

Her long hair were sprawled on his pillow beneath. Her long lashes had hidden her mesmerizing orbs underneath. Her skin was coated with a light shade of pink that was subtly natural and it enthralled him every time to caress her delicate features. Her intoxicating fragrance had not only filled his home but also his life with its sweetness, and he knew the more time he spent with her, the more he was getting addicted to her. An addiction to love her unconditionally.

He shook his head amused on his own thoughts. He stood away from her, with his loving gaze that was not ready to leave her sight. He resisted to go near her, scaring that he won't be able to control himself in her close presence.

He came out of his daze when his phone buzzed with a notification and he remembered that he had some matters in hand to deal on priority if he wanted to give her everything that she deserved. Hence, he hesitantly left the room and went to his study where Drake and Zander were already waiting for him.

He took a chair across the table where they were seated. Instead of beating around the bush, he came to the point and asked about the information that he asked them to dig in. He was immediately handed a piece of paper by Zander.

"Mr. Knight. This was stuck on your car at the backside. That is why, we couldn't find it immediately. And thankfully Mrs. Knight didn't notice it too."

As soon as Regan read it , his eyes darkened with an unforeseen fury that he didn't intend to control in that moment. He crumpled the paper in his fist and roared loudly.

"How dare he?"

He stood up harshly from his chair that it crashed on the hard floor. Drake flinched on his furious state while Zander stood there with his stoic face not moving a bit.

"Reg, calm down."

"Calm down?" He sneered unbelievably. "How can I calm down when some fuc**** bas**** is trying to threaten my wife? How dare he try to threaten what is mine?"

"I have an idea of how you would be feeling Reg. But Anna might be sleeping and you won't wish to wake her up and witness this."

"Of course not. She doesn't need to go through all of this when I am still alive. Did you find anything about him?" Regan asked bitterly.

"We couldn't find much. All we came to know is that there was a technical error with the electricity in the building for a few minutes, and that's when all this happened. The way it was done so quickly, it has to be someone who is well aware about the place."

Drake looked at Zander and roughly brushed a hand in his hair in exasperation.

"Look Reg. It might sound stupid to you, but Anna should know about this."

"No way." Regan instantly denied the rueful idea.

"Its about her. Someone wants to harm her and I think if she is informed, she can be more careful. Besides, she is the only one who can tell us about this person who is behind her. After all this is not the first time that someone wants to..." Drake trailed off when he saw Regan gritting his teeth with clenched fists.

"He is right Mr. Knight. For now, Mrs. Knight is the only one who can help us. What if she's alone and something happens to her."

"Leave." Regan muttered in a deathly cold voice.

"Reg...Try to understand....."

"I said leave." Angry and irritated, he blustered again and both of them left without a word.

Drake knew what Anna meant for Regan, but the way he reacted, he decided to give him some time to ponder over the situation as it was the only solution at the moment.

As soon as they left, Regan clutched his head in his hands thinking about the things that they said. He knew they were correct but the mere thought of the things that happened in the past week boiled his blood in anger.

He remembered the day when Richard met with that accident. It was Anna's car that he was traveling in along with Max. It was a major accident that caused Max's life and Richard ended up in the hospital in an extremely critical condition. They knew nothing about it until Richard himself told everything to Regan before his condition worsened. He had informed Regan about how the car was brutally crushed by a heavy truck on the deserted street as it was late at night with a few cars occasionally passing by. He had informed Regan that the accident was planned to harm Anna. He had wanted to speak further but he wasn't in a stable state to talk much. Before drifting into a deep sleep, he had whispered a few words for him to look after Anna and keep her safe at any cost as it was something related to her past which he was yet unknown about. It was then when he lost it and decided to keep her close to him to ensure her safety. But as if everything turned against him, Anna kept on ignoring him after his confession and he knew that he had to take some harsh steps to get his every right over her to handle the matter effectively according to his will. The only solution that came to his mind then was the wedding. He had never thought of marrying her without her consent, but owing to the circumstances, he refused her rejection and pleading to deny and married her within a week. Emily's harsh words and cold behavior towards Anna after knowing the reason behind Richard's accident helped him too to get his way.

It was quite late and he decided to retire for bed as he wanted to think over it with a fresh mindset. He was heading towards his room when he saw a faint light peeping out from the kitchen. He went to look and was surprised to see Anna near the refrigerator with a glass of water. The moment his eyes landed on her petite frame, his anger got replaced with anxiety as she was about to take some medicine that was in her other hand.

"Anna?" He reached to her in long strides with worry stretched on his face.

Before she could speak, he placed the back of his palm on her forehead to check her temperature. He frowned when he found that her body was cold.

"Are you not feeling well? What happened? Let me call the doctor." He said and dragged her gently to the living room.

"I am alright. I don't need a doctor."

He stopped on hearing her calm tone. He turned around and raised his brow, silently asking about the medicine. Anna looked down and bit her lips not knowing how to tell him about it.

"There's nothing to worry about. They are just.....my sleeping pills." She muttered softly. When he didn't speak, she continued. "I couldn't sleep. The sight of that car soaked in bl....blood. It's just not getting out of my mind and I am extremely tired. I need to rest. And I don't want to disturb you with my...with my nightmares again."

"How often do you take them?" He asked with a blank face.

She looked here and there not meeting his intent gaze. She was still pensive about everything. She had woken up once due to the nightmare and didn't find Regan beside her. She was anxious about his absence but was also relieved as she didn't want him to witness her in that vulnerable state again. So, she decided to take the medicine that Jack had prescribed her knowing about her sleeplessness at times.

"Not.....not much. Once or twice a week, when.....when I feel that my body wouldn't be able to cope up without sleep."

He stepped closer and lifted her chin with his curled index finger. She had kept her eyes lowered but he forced her to meet his solemn gaze which held emotions that bemused her with their intensity. He hadn't uttered anything but she could see his worried eyes that were still looking for her to see if she was alright. A sudden urge to ease him rose within her and she gave him a light smile.

"Don't worry. I am fine. I know this might be strange to you but I need these drugs sometimes as they lulls me to sleep to drain away my fatigue."

"Do you trust me Anna?"

"What?"

She couldn't understand the reason behind his unexpected question.

"Do you trust me?" He asked again.

"I don't know why but that's what I have been doing since the day I have met you." She said truthfully. "I trust you more than I trust myself or anyone in this world."

The words slipped from her mouth before she could stop herself. No matter what happened or how the things changed, the only thing she realized after spending the previous months with him was that whatever the situation was, her trust on him never wavered for once. She trusted him with all that she had. Blindly. And that's what he wanted to hear from her. He took the glass and medicine from her hand before keeping them aside. Without speaking further, he carried her in his arms and headed towards their room. Her eyes widened and a surprised squeal escaped her lips. She unknowingly encircled her arms around his neck not realizing the impact of her innocuous action on him.

"What.....What are you doing? Put me down please."

"Didn't you say you are tired and want to sleep?"

"So?"

He smiled on seeing her amusement. "So, I am taking you to bed."

He gently laid her on the bed and tucked her in the soft covers. He sat beside her and took her hand in his.

"I might not understand what you're going through, but I am always here for you.....to talk to me if you need to. You can always talk to me Anna.....about anything and everything, without worrying about getting judged for anything you feel or say. Always remember. You aren't alone anymore. If those medicines are the drugs that help you to sleep, then let me be your drug for your every sleepless night and pain. Let me take care of you."

He kissed her hand and held her gaze to show the truth behind his every word. Her eyes brimmed with tears on hearing him. His unconditional love was seeping deep into her heart and soul and she could feel it. She wanted to get away from him fearing that she would somehow hurt him, but her heart was gradually accepting him and his love and she didn't know the way to stop it from doing so. The more she wanted to close herself, the more he was opening the closed doors of her heart lurching into the forbidden territory, tearing apart her walls. Bit by bit.

"Why are you so good to me?"

Instead of answering her, he smiled and before she could realize, he slipped beside her enveloping her in his arms. He brushed her hair back, gently caressing her face and she closed her eyes, silently accepting his affection this time..... without hesitating. Soon, her eyes became heavy and she went into a deep, peaceful slumber, but heard a faint voice before drifting completely.

"The answer to your every question is that... I love you. I love you too much heart."
