CHAPTER 19

Maxwell's anger knew no bound, he actually felt like killing somebody as he looked at Kate. To actually use him, dump him and return without shame, even insulting his wife on top of that!. If not because of the implemented rules that condemned killing in the sanctuary, he would have roasted her the second the flames clicked.

"No matter the consequences, if you don't leave here now, I will burn you to cinders" he said.

The air seemed to rise a few degrees higher as the heat emitted by the flames permeated through the air. Naturally, everyone has a reverse scale. His however was his wife, he would not allow anyone - no matter whoever they were - to insult or mistreat his woman. . . NEVER!.

Shocked by the outburst of Maxwell, Kate stood frozen on a spot. No matter what she had not expected the reaction of Maxwell to be so intense. With an ugly expression on her face, she opened the door to her car and leapt in. Casting one last look at Maxwell, she directly drove away with a resentful heart. 'No matter what she would show them, they would beg for mercy and she would turn a deaf hear to it', she thought.

Following the truck with his eyes, Maxwell wished that he could take action against her at the moment to prevent future problems but he knew it was impossible. He was the head of the sanctuary but his morals and principles would never allow him abuse his power and authority. Turning his attention to his apartment, he walked towards it and was about to push the door open when he suddenly felt dizzy. The next moment, he passed out.

*Beep. . .*.

As Maxwell gained consciousness, a bout of dizziness hit him and he groaned. The light seemed blinding as he opened his eyes and he had to get raid of the intense light by closing his eyes, rapidly blinking he adjusted to the sunlight and could finally see his surroundings. He was in a room surrounded by several medical machines, tools and stuff like that. The beeping sounds he had heard was from a few machines connected to him that showed that his vital organs were functioning properly, as for people he saw a few attendants beside him. Few seconds later, Dr James appeared at the doorway with a young man in an attendant's uniform behind him, apparently he had gone to seek the doctor the moment he noticed signs of revival.

"Now how is my favourite leader doing?", Dr James smiled as soon as he appeared. Naturally the relationship between Maxwell and Dr James had transcended the mere acquaintance stage, he could not be considered a friend to Maxwell yet -after all they had only met on two occasions prior this, the day he woke up from his sickness and the day he called to inform him of the new lead they with their research and warn him - but he was only a step behind the mark, so it was not strange that Dr James would actually bring up a joke the moment he appeared. But at that time, Maxwell realised something and wasn't in the mood for jokes.

"James how long have I been here for?" he asked. The last thing he remembered was triggering his powers after his long lost shameless ex reappeared and insulted Anthonia before leaving after he threatened her and finally. . . Nothing!.

"Okaay, looks like someone is already missing his babe huh?" Dr James teased, "Well I have to testify that your love is not one sided because for the three days you were here, that lady just won't stop coming here. I wonder how she manages to carry out her duties as the sanctuary head if she can't even cope for a few days without you!. . .".

Maxwell's head seemed to spin, 'three days away from his girlfriend when they just got together!, how was that supposed to help the growth of the relationship?' he though.

At that moment, an attendant arrived at the door of his ward. "Boss. . . The vice head is here and she demands to see the sanctuary leader as usual. This time she insists that she will do everything needed, even forcefully gaining entry if she is denied permission to see him", the attendant said.

Looking at Maxwell with an 'I told you so' look, James turned to the attendant and replied, "It's okay, tell the vice head that the sanctuary head is currently awake and she can come in to see him if she wants to. How ever make sure all weapons are left outside the building and her clothing is sterilised before she steps into this ward". As the attendant departed to deliver the message, a strange look could be seen on her face. Naturally it did not escape Maxwell's sight.

"Why is she looking like that?", he asked.

"Oh about that, naturally apart from the weapons part the rest are not necessary. I only asked for those demands to be met as a repayment of all the hardships she put me through this past few days", James replied letting out a loud laugh.

Obviously he was enjoying the moment of his revenge and wouldn't want to do anything but immerse himself in it, but all that wasn't going to happen with Maxwell there.

"So can you tell me why I'm currently in a hospital with dozens of machines connected on my body?". He asked intentionally cutting James's excitement short, since he was enjoying the feeling of frustrating his fiancée, how could he allow him fully relish the moment and sensation.

Just as expected, hearing the question Maxwell asked all the forms of playfulness and jokiness' ceased to exist on James face. He took a chair and sat down beside Maxwell's bed as he began to explain.

"Actually I was quite shocked myself when you were admitted unconscious into the infirmary, naturally as a person that possessed superpowers although I had no idea that you had triggered it, you were supposed to be immune to about ninety seven percent of the sicknesses that exist in this world", James said. "At first I thought there was something wrong with your

transformation or mutation, but after further research I discovered that your energy usage was actually the cause. You had just triggered your powers but you used it for a prolonged period of time, people trigger their powers under different situations as I told you, some people only need it to save them from immediate danger, but in your case it was activated for a long time with-out actually gathering enough power as it was an instant activation. Using your powers for such periods of time at your level will actually leave you all sapped dry and that's why you passed out. However from my hypothesis, it's not going to be so for ever. After all what use would it be if you cannot use the so called powers properly?, as you grow stronger and increase yourefficiency in controlling your energy, you will be able to use it for much longer and do even more amazing things than you must have done that day".

Maxwell was stumped, so even his powers were supposed to be classified in levels and right now he was at the weakest of weakest levels that existed. He couldn't even keep his fire energy activated for twenty minutes or else he would be on the risk of passing out. Just like that the happiness that was blossoming in his heart directly died and in its place grew resolution, 'He had to get strong' he thought. He had to get strong not only for himself but for Anthonia, for his sanctuary, for those he cared for like family, he had to get strong so that he would protect them. No matter what, he had people that looked up to him for protection and he wanted to be there when they needed him.

"Now that my own matters are out of the way, can you bring. . ." he was about to ask to be brought to see the other people that successfully passed through their mutation ordeal when Anthonia just happened to walk in at that moment.

"No!. . ." she interrupted, "He is taking you nowhere until I am sure that you are totally alright and will not be collapsing at the front of my door in the nearest future. As for you. . ." she said pointing to James. "What the hell was all the sterilising exercises I had to go through, only heavens know what is so special about this place that requires me to go through so mush problems". Clearly it could be seen that Anthonia was mad, she had definitely complained to several of the attendants that attended to her but they all fell on deaf ears. Rising from his bed with effort, Maxwell walked towards Anthonia and wrapped his arms around her. Feeling her skin on his, he felt a form of comfort flowing within him as well as her body instinctively leaning on his. Obviously within the past few days of his hospitalisation, she had been too tensed to relax her heart and concentrate on other stuff, that was the reason why she had been forcing herself to resist the urge to go against Dr James orders and barge into his room during the period of his

unconsciousness. Seeing the dark bags under her eyes, he gave her a peck on the forehead and closed his eyes while letting out a sigh.

"Anthonia, no matter what you say I'm the head of the sanctuary. If I don't worry about it who will?. I have to still perform some assignments that are pertaining to my position. So I hope you understand that what I was about to check out is very essential for our sanctuary. Besides who said that I'm going alone, you are going with me", he said.

Watching he two of the acting all loving and shit, Dr James didn't know what to say. He could only turn in the opposite direction while his mouth twitched slightly, at that moment he wished he had a woman for himself. But he was an extremely busy person who had little time for himself, he had always been like that and would probably continue to be. . . Except at that

moment, it was just too oppressive for them to be displaying affections and totally discard him like he was non existent.

Without so much as a sound, he actually began to walk out of the ward with the kind intentions of giving them space when Maxwell called him back, "So could you take us to see the other people that managed to gain consciousness, I would like to take a casual look at them".
