Ash grunted and shifted his weight, offended on my behalf. But I didn't move. Just let my gaze trail beyond Emory to where David and Stark stood near the doorway into the room, heads together along with a servant I didn't recognize.

The guard led Emory straight to David, and he and Stark both turned. Stark spoke first, but David's gaze was avid, fixed on her, watching her. His dark eyes had those shining pinpoints of light that appeared whenever he was intense.

My stomach clenched watching him put that kind of focus on another woman.

He has to, I reminded myself. He has to be seen to still be considering the other women—and this is an intense situation. Someone died. Of course he was focused.

Still, I wished I could read lips when he spoke, when either of them spoke.
