It was as if once I started speaking, he heard a starter's gun. His eyes were bright, avid on me, as if he wanted to have the conversation as much as I did.

"My father—"

"Died at my hand. Personally. I wasn't lying. Next."

"What happened to him when… when he died?"

"He did not fade from this world because he was born here."

"Where is his body?"

"I took it—or rather my men did. It's buried somewhere near the lake, under some bushes beneath the trees near the lakeside."

He smiled, because he knew as well as I did that that description could mean anywhere in a mile-and-a-half stretch around the lake.

"Ask, David," he murmured.

I rolled my jaw, but it was pointless to resist. He was only telling me to do what I wanted to do. And he knew it.

"My mother?"
