1 A Day Like Any Other

The day started normal just like any other, the singsong of birds, the mechanical lullaby of his alarm clock, and the penetrating rays of light as they caressed his body. Slowly opening his eyes to the most breathtaking woman to ever exist, he couldn't help but smile at her, she was his wife, the one he had promised his everything to.

She stood at a height of 5ft'1in' slightly below the average, her figure was lean, yet she moved with a slight grace. Her womanly assets seem to be a contentious topic, she'd claim she's above average, but, if you ever tell her she's a bit below… well I pray for your soul.

She was surely the definition of an early bird, already up and about at 6:00 A.M, her vibrant and sparkling pink eyes seemed to hold endless vigor. Though perhaps it was a necessary trait to have, considering how all researchers were required to be present by 6:30 in the morning, there'd surely be a severe punishment if they arrived late.

Sometimes he wondered if the strict punishment for rule breakers was really necessary, surely Dolmera dome could be a bit laxer with its rules. He'd never be caught saying such words aloud of course, the punishment would be severe for anyone, and even more for an enforcer. Though, perhaps he shouldn't be applying old earth views to this new world, humanity had only been here a little over a century after all.

He was broken from his thoughts by the sight of his wife's silky smooth bright pink hair drooping over him, her hand gently reached over and caressed his cheek as she brought her lips to his, a slight daze arrived just as quickly as it dissipated, as he began to passionately kiss back.

Slowly separating, her slightly high pitched and gentle voice called out, it always seemed to enhance her figure and hide her true age. A small grin covered her face, and her eyes held a visible spark of affection, her hair glittering like always as she leaned back.

"Did you enjoy that? Well perhaps we'll be able to get further tonight, that is of course, if you, get up, and get ready. I don't think I've ever been the one who was given punishment for arriving late, now have I?"

I grimaced at that, it was true, I have been late a few times… a number of times, it's only thanks to my work ethics and outstanding record that I wasn't relocated to a different job. My wife seemed to notice my look, her grin visibly widened, her face relaxed and you could see mirth in her eyes, and then she crossed her arms, it was the smug look of someone who had just had their point proved.

Feeling that I needed to at least protect some of my dignity, I flipped my blankets to the side, as I rose as quickly as I could, silently turning to look at her, I saw it, that glare just dared me to deny. You wanna know what I did? I did what anyone with a bit of reason would do, I nodded, slowly turned, and speed walked away, I needed to escape the fact that I just did that… I mean seriously? Why Me, WHY? WHY DID I JUST DO THAT?"

I could hear her giggling behind me before she spoke once more, a slightly more serious tone, though laced with a subtle joy.

"That's what I thought! It seems I have the pants on both literally and metaphorically, at least compared to you, but that's enough flirting for now, I'm heading out, I'll see you later tonight honey, make sure you pack lunch, don't forget your wallet at home, oh and don't get into any risky situations with espers, alright, I love you, bye … OH I ALMOST FORGOT! I have a surprise I'm bringing home tonight, I know you'll love it."

I was blushing as she brushed past me, indeed I was only wearing underwear and needed to go back, grab some clothes, and get dressed. Despite being given military training though, I couldn't help but jump at my wife's sudden outburst. I briefly wonder what she meant before giving up, she always seems to forget to tell me about important things, later when she realizes she'll feel guilty, and always reveals it to me as a surprise. _____________________________________________________________________

Having showered, dressed, and become presentable, I grabbed a bowl of cereal with milk, headed to the couch and sat down.

Grabbing the remote, I turned on the tv, the channel was currently, the news, ah yes, apparently one of the newer radical groups seemed to have taken a building of people as hostages, though it seemed it was already over. Though seeing a certain face I couldn't help but sigh it was the child of an executive, and that was bad news for not only the radicals but the enforcers as well.

A large number of us would be ordered to go in hot, a full on raid, normally we'd have gathered information from undercover agents before raiding. We'd know what weapons they have, how many espers are participating and what powers they use, see if any of the dangerous species are involved, those kinds of things, but we don't currently have that knowledge, and now a lot of enforcers will be part of the raid, and only half of the normal info will be available, many might die today.

I can't help but silently pray to whatever god above that I'm placed with miscellaneous duties, normally no one would want to be assigned that job, but considering the alternative where you are risking everything, include all the unknowns, and whatever espers will be present… well you get the idea.

Finished eating I look at the clock, 7:15 A.M, I grab my wallet and keys before heading towards the door. I stop halfway having noticed a folder seemingly flug about in a side room, papers must have fallen all over the floor, I can't help but feel guilt and sadness roiling in my gut.

I'm relatively sure I know what it is, my wife is an esper and for a long time we'd been trying to have a child. However, espers often have difficulties with conception, and giving birth, sometimes the developing child will just die in the womb without warning.

I apprehensively walk towards files discarded all over the floor, I slowly reach towards the closest paper, my heart skips a beat as the sadness and guilt in my stomach solidifies. It details how one of Lilies' developing children died after 3 weeks in the womb. After digesting the information I began picking up all the crumbled and mishandled papers, a gloomy mood overhead, I placed them all in the only folder found in the room.

Oddly one paper seems completely fine, it's sitting on the small coffee table. I go to pick it up, but then suddenly freeze, my brain completely halts for a moment as I scan the title. It reads "Exterior Womb Experiment - Success - Birth Certificate" . Suddenly I don't know whether to be sad, angry, or happy. This must've been what Lily forgot to tell me, I can only take a moment to pinch the bridge of my nose, lean my head back and sigh. Bewilderment completely replaces my previous gloomy mood.

I'm currently driving my motorcycle to the station, silently hoping that nothing interrupts me, though a few of my late arrivals were caused to sleeping in, most were due to incidents that occured when I was driving to the my Enforcer Station HQ, noticing hoodlums harassing someone, espers attacking others because of a common but also false entitled belief, then there is the discrimination of non human races, and sorcery wielders.

I'm not sure about the other dome's, but in Dolmera Dome discrimination is uncomfortably noticable, frankly even most enforcers will ignore blatant discrimination, and then there are the executives, as if there was any chance in hell they would help, the lazy bastards. It's always irritating to see fellow enforcers, the ones who are supposed to protect and maintain order, just stand there, doing nothing but watching.

Though the worst discrimination only happens to two types of races, the non-human and the bio-weapon classified races. Non-human discrimination is self-explanatory, they range from sentient slimes, arachne, giants, centaur, orcs, goblins, etcetera.

Then there are races inherently given the label of bio-weapon due to the danger even a child of their race presents. For example the race Mulrasdas, they are extremely human in appearance the only difference is that they have two short horns on the top of their head.

However, they are all extremely dangerous if they want to be, each of them has a set of 50 'astral arms', these limbs are all attached to the back, and they are invisible to most modern and emerging technologies, not to mention, espers, or magic practitioners. The most capable of the Mulrasdas, currently the queen, can extend these limbs up to a mile in length, have them vibrate at a variety of frequencies for different effects, have them pass through physical objects to interact with things beyond said object, and these are just a few capabilities, having incredibly strong physical bodies as well. Well, currently everyone one of them is highly watched and have limiting collars', and well,

I'm not certain but there are rumors that the queen of their race is locked up in some incredibly high security complex, honestly I can even understand the reasoning in limiters, their capabilities would terrify anyone. However, if the rumors are true… well… its a bit too far, anyways moving on, obviously most bio-weapon races don't approach their power, however they do still face discrimination.

Only the most human-like races are free of dicrimination, the elves, dwarves, hobbits, fairies, angels, etc.

Reaching my destination I park my motorcycle and head into HQ, thankfully nothing interrupted my drive and I arrived on time, hopefully I'm not going to have bad luck today.
