Too Sidetracked

While I began to walk I felt it again.

"There's another breeze. Is this you?" I yell.

Originally when I felt a breeze I thought it was the subway entrance but it turned out to be a weird summoning of an unknown voice that took away my senses and distracted me from the oncoming undead.

"Are you here?"

There was no answer so it must not have been the same voice.

"Could it be that I'm actually near an entrance this time?"

The cold breeze was more subtle and carried an aroma of the outside world. It came to my sense of smell with euphoria.

"I remember the times I used to sit at the university and scribble under the tree or sit in my car and write."

It was how I coped with the ever changing world.

"If I can take the time for one of these days to do that again I think it would help put aside this hectic world for a minute or two. Maybe I can find a way to retire in this horrible world and write my life away."

The memories were a good moment of the past but I've been getting too side tracked.

"Focus. I can't keep doing this."

The smell of rotten blood rushed to my nose and quickly changed my stance.

"Looks like daydreaming will have to wait for another day. Maybe- just maybe."

The sound of footsteps slowly came into recognition. It echoed simultaneously, not like before when the undead zombies were marching. This time the sounds of footsteps we're out of sync.

"Maybe twenty. Maybe thirty."

There was an unknown amount of them. It couldn't pinpoint the amount because of the many footsteps that happened at the same time.

"There's way too many. I've got to figure something out."

It was a difficult situation. I really don't have much of an idea of what to do.

"Things would be different if I could see, maybe there was a way around. It's not like I can expect them to walk around a blind lady. These creatures are way too uncivilized for something so generous."

The footsteps were slow and didn't seem like they were approaching me with haste. I might not have grabbed their attention.

"I could try to throw something and maybe get a sense of the tunnels and entrance that the breeze is coming from-"

I must have been too focused from thinking about my escape route when something unexpected came from nearby me.

I tried not to move because the footsteps still didn't seem to have approached me with haste. I might have made it through some of their sense. I felt it but didn't hear it at this moment.

"Gah"

It was on of the undead that travelled in front of the pack.

"Did they really not notice me?"

I wanted to believe this but there's too much of a risk to just allow them to walk by. I have to do something to at least up the chances of passing by.

"It's a good idea to try to walk by them. I wouldn't have gotten the idea without you here."

The undead that was ahead of the pack was far enough to make a few quick movements to kill and hide behind the body.

I grabbed the knife out of the cloth I had wrapped around it and let it fall into my right hand.

I still only knew the undead was nearby because of the footsteps it made, but this time I had to focus entirely on the location of this single dead walker to get the distance between my blade and its neck right.

The aura that I've recognized as the undead started to appear faintly and the sounds of cold steel rattling helped me figure the height of the body.

"If it wasn't for you sneaking by me the way you just did then I wouldn't have gotten the idea. I don't know how you did it but thank you."

"Guhh-"

The undead made the sound as if it was some sort of response to what I just said. It was too late for it though.

I whipped the blade into the neck of the undead and severed it clean off.

"I really hope you're not too heavy."

I made sure to let the head fall but I was able to catch the body before it fell and made too much noise.

"All that's left is to stick to the wall and stay here until it's safe. I can't let another one of these guys sneak on me again. I need to make sure I'm focused but also alert."

I dragged the body of the undead that was spilling blood from the severed veins and artery that ran along its neck. It came to a slow as the undead zombie had an empty chess cavity.

"Right here should be good."

I sat down along the wall of the tunnels and dragged the body spilling of blood overtop of me. The blood trickled from my hands onto my body and slowly covered me until I was dripping like I had jumped into a pool of blood.

"I need to focus now. It's disgusting but I need to ignore this."

The smell was horrible. The aroma filled the tunnels with rotten blood and something like the smell of countless dead bodies being digested. It was unrecognizable and only can be said to have a similarity to one thing or another.

"If I have to hold my breath than fine, but I need to focus on their footsteps."

There was too many to try to focus on the aura of each individual one, even trying to hear the amount of bones that crunched within their body was too hard of a feat at this moment. I had an unbearable smell that I had to ignore.

"This is the least I can do right now. I need to blend in and become something that can pass through a crowd. I need to become a nobody."

It was long enough but the footsteps slowly came closer. They were a few feet away, walking without haste.

"They didn't notice me yet have they?"

Footsteps stumbled and loud thumps echoed the tunnels as they were just about to pass me.
