Chapter 10

“Just the ones I see,” Sofia said, then turned to him with a pout. “Everyone in my class said they’ll go to the zoo, so they’re gonna have more animals than me.”

Luke raised his eyebrows slightly. “Everyone, huh?”

“Yes, Dad,” she said, a whine creeping into her voice. “Can we go to the zoo?”

“What, today?” he asked, glancing at the picnic hamper, still pretty full of food. He didn’t want to carry that around for hours.

“Please, Dad,” she bleated.

Jamie also looked at the hamper, then asked, “Did you drive?”

Luke shook his head. “Nope. Got an Uber here.”

“I’ve got Alex’s car,” Jamie said, “and I managed to get a spot quite close by. If you want to put your stuff in the trunk, or anything.”

“Uh,” Luke said, weighing up the options. But Sofia was already bouncing in excitement. “Can Jamie come too?” she asked, looking pleadingly at him. “Please, Dad! Can we go to the zoo?”
