1 Chapter 01: Introduction

Before Quirks began showing up, some of the most popular discussions were related to things like "What would you want as a superpower?", or "What would you do if you were in a world with powers?" People wondered what the world would be like if people with literal superpowers would be something you could find just by going down to your local supermarket.

But, eventually, they didn't have to wonder anymore.

One day, a baby was born. Typical thing, right? Happens every day. But something was different with this baby. It emitted light. This, was the start of Quirks.

Fast forward a couple of years. Well, a lot of years. Now, 80% of the world have superpowers referred to as "Quirks". 20% of the population, however, have no powers, these people are referred to as "Quirkless". One of the biggest occupations in this society are people who basically save and rescue others using their Quirks. These people are referred to as Heroes. In this world, it's more of a job than a title most of the time. On that same note, there are people who choose to wreak havoc on others using their Quirks. These people are referred to as Villains.

See, some Quirks are pretty damn amazing. Some to note are Endeavor, the number 2 Hero's Quirk, Hellflame. No, it's not literal flames from Hell, it's basically just really hot fire. Well, hotter than usual. Another example of a great Quirk is that of the Rabbit Hero: Miruko. It basically gives her properties of a rabbit. That includes incredible leg strength, great hearing and animal instincts.

But it's very rare to actually get a really good quirk. For example, a pretty crappy quirk that really isn't that rare to find would be something like elongation, which basically just allows you to extend a body part pretty far. I don't see a person who can elongate their neck becoming a powerful fighter. Another one that's pretty crap but also quite common are slightly enhanced senses, like sight, hearing, smell, etc. They sound good, right? Not if it makes that sense 0.4x better than normal. Congratulations, you can smell your food from like, 3 or 4 meters further away from someone else. Congratulations, you can see literally a meter clearer than anyone else.

My point is, very few people actually get worthwhile Quirks, so most people, even those who get Quirks, don't actually have the potential to become so much as a D-list hero, much less one in the top ten rankings. Imagine trying to contend with people like Miruko and Endeavor with a Quirk that lets your voice sound slightly nicer than other people's. It's not happening.

Now, let's say you actually DO get a good quirk, like fire control, or something like radiation manipulation. Sure, you've got a powerful ability. But, you better pray that the quirk comes with some kind of resistance to your own power. Something to stop your own ability from causing you excruciating agony. Because that's my problem.

My name, is Jokara Kowai. My Quirk is Bone Weaponry. I can use the bones in my body the same way that a character from an anime before Quirks did. The character's name was Kimimaro Kaguya. He had a special ability, referred to in the anime as a "Kekkei Genkai" (Literally meaning "A technique limited to inheritance by blood"). It was called Shikotsumyaku. It allowed him to use his bones as weapons and, to a small extent, armour. (One of the most underrated abilities in fiction in my opinion. It's cool as fuck.)

Yeah, my Quirk basically lets me do that. But, here's the catch, and why I mentioned that whole "Pray for resistance to your power" part. Whenever I use my power, it doesn't have some kind of slot in my skin that allows it to harmlessly come out of my body. No. It will first manifest inside my body, then, it will shoot out of my skin at super fast speeds, ripping through muscles, flesh and skin, and only then is it ready for what I wanted to use it for.

The first time I learnt I had a Quirk, I didn't know what it was. Sure, I knew I had one, but I had zero idea what the hell it was. So, I tried to find some kind of activation method. Yelling phrases, getting into stances, stuff like that. Eventually, I managed to activate it, but I had no idea how much pain I was going to end up putting myself through. I tried to activate my Quirk by imagining something coming out of my body. It worked, but in the most painful way possible. I was not thinking that my Quirk would be something that would hurt me, so I ended up having sharp bones impale through my skin on my legs, arms, chest, back, and head. Muscles were shredded, skin was shot and sliced off like paper, and my bloodied skin fell to the ground and covered the floor like sawdust. I let out a scream of pain so loud and visceral that to this day, the area around where I was when I first activated my Quirk has rumours about a vengeful banshee that came back from the dead, signified by what they don't know was my scream of pain. People who live there leave offerings outside their homes in case the "banshee" visits their doorstep.

This is the story of how I became the Bone Hero. Also known, as the New Symbol Of Fear.
