21 To be Humans (II)...

It took them somewhere around three minutes to clear the horde and reach the house. Yuriko and Kohta had been a huge help even though they didn't need it. Roberta, Bella, and Daichi could have managed it on their own. Daichi unlocked the front gate and entered the front yard without wasting any more time, but he found that he was too late.

The father was already dead and the little girl was wailing in front of her father, begging him to get up. Daichi felt really bad for the little girl, he couldn't fathom what she was going through right now, but he was sure that it wasn't anything good. Daichi kneeled down beside the girl and she finally noticed his presence.

Her tear filled eyes focused on Daichi. "Mister! Please help my papa. He isn't getting up!" The little girl wailed and she started to tug on his sleeve. The girl had a small dog in her arms. Daichi had no idea how he was supposed to tell her the truth. He gulped down a lump in his throat. "Mister, please! My father is not getting up" the little girl continued to tug at his sleeve.

Daichi swallowed again and wrapped his arm around the girl. "Everything will be fine, you don't need to worry. We will help your father. Your mama is waiting for you in that house" Daichi turned around and pointed towards their temporary base.

The girl sniffed audibly, trying to stop her sobs and then she hiccuped. "Mama" The girl called out and continued to sob again. Daichi gently scooped up the girl in his arms while the dog was still in her arms. The dog was trying to cheer up the girl by licking her face, but it wasn't working. Then he turned towards Bella.

"Can you bring him to the house?" Daichi softly requested and Bella nodded her head with a solemn look on her face. After observing the solemn look on her Lord, she mirrored his expression. She didn't want to have fun when her Lord looked so saddened. She could always cheer him up later.

With a snap of her fingers, Bella levitated the corpse. Roberta didn't make any comments and simply followed Daichi, but internally she was glad that the husband kicked the bucket. Now Chiba would be able to serve Daichi-sama without having any misplaced feelings of guilt.

The trio returned to their base in complete silence… Well, not technically a trio any more, since Daichi was carrying the little girl and the small dog in his arms. The girl has been continuously sobbing on the way. The street in front of their base has also been cleared by Saeko and Kemono, so they weren't going to have any problems even though the girl was crying loudly.

Saeko and Kemono easily read the mood and decided to remain silent as Daichi entered the house followed by Bella, who was using Magic to carry the late father of the girl. Daichi was almost knocked over by Chiba who came rushing at him with her arms extended.

"Alice!!" Daichi immediately understood what she wanted, so he gently handed over the girl to her mother. Maybe Chiba would be able to comfort her daughter.

"Mama!" The little girl exclaimed somewhat excitedly, but nobody missed the pain in her voice. Chiba tightly wrapped her arms around her daughter in a protective manner. "Mama! Father is not waking up!" The little girl said as tears continued to roll down her eyes. The little dog was still in Alice's arms and right now, the dog seemed to be whimpering in sadness too.

As soon as the words left the little girl's mouth, Bella also entered the house with the body of her late father in tow. Chiba almost broke down when she saw the sight, but she knew that she needed to stay strong for her daughter and she could always cry later. Chiba placed the little girl on the floor and wiped her tears with her hands.

"Don't worry, Alice. Everything will be fine. Your father is simply tired and decided to fall asleep" Chiba lied, everyone present in the room could only sympathize with the whole situation, but they couldn't do anything else besides that. Despite Chiba's efforts attempting to console her daughter, Alice continued sobbing, until after a few minutes, she finally fell asleep.

Chiba picked up the girl along with the dog in her arms, and then she turned towards Daichi. "Thank you for bringing his body… I will at least be able to give him a proper burial" Chiba said in a neutral tone, but everyone knew that she was barely holding up. After that, Chiba quickly left the room with her daughter and the dog in her arms.

Daichi decided to place the body in the backyard and then a sheet was placed over the body. Now that everything was finally taken care of, Daichi decided that it was prudent to have a small chat with Tsukomo and Aoba with everyone present. He would have preferred if Chiba was here too, because he was sure that she would have liked to know how her husband had died, but Daichi wasn't cruel enough to ask her to attend the meeting.

"So, what exactly happened?" Daichi questioned with a serious look on his face. The whole group was gathered inside the kitchen.

Tsukomo and Aoba looked at each other and Tsukomo decided to start explaining after clearing his throat. "The father was probably trying to find a safe place to spend the night. He was dropping by all the houses. They finally arrived at the house from where you…" Tsukomo paused. He was about to say saved them, but the father had died and they were only able to save the daughter. He was quite grateful for that.

"Saved the daughter. We don't know exactly what happened, but from the expressions of the father, it seemed that a few angry words might have been exchanged. The people inside the house finally opened the door and it happened so fast that we didn't even understand what was happening for a few moments. It seemed that someone inside the house stabbed the father…" Tsukomo's voice trailed off with a pained look on his face, so Aoba decided to add the last few bits of the story…

"After that we decided to call all of you. You know the rest" Aoba added. His part was completely unimportant, but Daichi decided not to say that out loud.

"So, the residents of the house are responsible for killing the man?" Daichi heard them the first time, but he simply wanted some clarification.

"Uh… yes" Tsukomo answered immediately.

"So, what are we going to do?" Yuriko asked from the side and Daichi simply released a sigh.

"Personally, I want to go and knock down their door and leave the Zombies to feast on them…" Daichi answered in an indifferent tone and some of the members of the group looked completely aghast after hearing his answer, but most of the members seemed to agree with Daichi. "Unfortunately, it is not my place to decide what to do with them. It depends on Maresato Chiba. If she wants revenge, then I will help her and if she decides to let them go, I am fine with it too" Daichi shrugged.

This time everyone in the room agreed with Daichi's decision. Some were still not happy with the whole revenge thing, but realised that they would also probably want revenge if they were in her shoes. "It is quite late, we can discuss everything tomorrow morning. The two of you get some rest, I will keep an eye on the outside" Daichi said while looking towards Tsukomo and Aoba. The two of them gave him a grateful nod.

Daichi stood up from his seat and he was about to leave, when he noticed that Bella had raised her hand, like she was in class. "Yes, Bella?" Daichi asked. He didn't say it out loud in the current atmosphere, but he found her actions quite amusing.

"Can I accompany you, my lord?" Bella asked in an excited tone. By this time, the whole group knew that Bella was unhinged and quite insane, and almost all of them found her downright scary too. So, without making any comments on her attitude, they quickly scurried out of the kitchen.

"Sure…" Daichi accepted her offer. He really liked spending time with Bella.

"Then I am going to sleep. If you need me then wake me up. Let's go Roberta" Kemono said and after giving her son a peck on the lips, she left the room. Roberta tried to leave the room with Kemono, but Daichi grabbed her hand and pecked her on the lips. Only after that did he allow her to leave, but he didn't forget to give her a smack on the ass.

"You are such a womanizer, Daichi-kun" Saeko softly giggled and Daichi simply grinned.

"What can I say? Blame my manly charm" Daichi grinned and wrapped his arms around Bella and Saeko. He was about to leave, but Saeko stopped him.

"Daichi-kun, let me get some tea. I will join the two of you after that" Saeko suggested and Daichi simply hummed in agreement. He pecked her on the lips and finally left the kitchen with Bella in his arms, who was busy rubbing her face over Daichi's chest while sniffing deeply…
