Chapter 29: Chase Explains

Harlan escaped into Helina’s apartment before Chase could get a good look at him and question his lack of wounds. Helina heard the door close behind her. She held her heels in her hand and turned to look at her boss. She’d hoped to deal with him after a good night’s sleep, but here he was. He must have been listening at his door for the elevator.

Chase had taken off his bowtie. His shirtsleeves were rolled up to his elbows, showing off his forearms. What was it about when he did that? Why was it so panty-melting? His hair stuck up as if he’d run his hands through it. The frown on his face spoke volumes, but she couldn’t sense any anger.

“You said you were sick,” he said.

She glanced back at her doorway, but there would be no escape. “I wasn’t sick. It was a convenient excuse to leave.”

“I got that since you weren’t home when I arrived,” he said opening his door wider for her.
