1 The Beginning of The End

Everyone has cried at least once in their life. The first moment is when they entered the world as a newborn. Then as they grew up, events would happen around them, events that would bring tears of joy or tears of pain.

Hardships and pain are unavoidable in life. When reaching for the light at the end of the path, there would always be an obstacle waiting to be overcome. And when one of those obstacles seem impossible to be overcome, tears would fall.

So naturally, when I heard those shocking, heart-breaking words from his mouth, my eyes swelled with unfallen tears. I stopped on the way up the stairs and turned around to face him.

"W-what did you say?", I stuttered, not believing what I heard.

"I said 'I want a divorce'", he repeated once more, "I no longer what to be your husband".

I held onto the handrail to prevent me from falling and desperately stared into his eyes for something to show it was just a joke. However, I knew he wasn't joking before I even searched his eyes. Despite the fact that the coldness the past week should have been enough for me to be warned beforehand, I never saw it coming.

It didn't matter whether I knew or not though. If someone punches you in the stomach, you would feel pain whether you expected it or not. So when he told me he stopped loving me, I felt the blow even when I saw it coming.

His eyes were lifeless and dull, no longer shining as it did before. And beneath it all, I saw a turbulence of anger just waiting to be released.

"W-why? What have I done wrong? We can work through this like everything else."

But those words of mine did nothing but add oil to the fire.
