1 FRIEND OF MINE

I've known you for so long

You are a friend of mine

But is this all we'd ever be?

I've loved you ever since

You are a friend of mine

But babe, is this all we ever could be?

Anna keeps her eyes on their wide farm yard from the window of her room. As she listens to the song that always plays on her player every single day, her lips can't help but smile a sad one watching the very person she dedicates the song to riding his horse outside. William, his best friend since forever, has also been the love of her life since she can remember. Just like their parents who are best of friends since high school, the two of them are inseparable. They share the same birthday, the same circle of friends, the same favorites, the same allergies and their names are from the famous characters of their mothers favorite movie of all time, Notting Hill. Anyone who knows them understands that one can't come without the other and for whatever reason, they never do good without each other.

Every weekend at four, they go horse bike riding around her family's land and go home to his for a nice dinner that their mothers prepare. Both of their families share a fun conversation during a delicious meal that usually last for hours.

You tell me things I've never known

I've shown you love you've never shown

But then again when you cry

I'm always at your side

You tell me bout the love you've had

And I listen very eagerly

But deep inside you'll never see

This feeling of emptiness

It makes me feel sad

But then again

Then again

Then again, I'm glad

Anna finishes her song and everyone claps their hands like they've never heard her sing before. 10 o' clock after dinner is karaoke time for all of them and having been blessed with good singing voice, nobody in either families is reluctant to hold the mic. And Anna's go to karaoke song is the classic Filipino song 'A Friend of Mine".

"That's very moving as always Anna." His Mom, Megan, commends with her signature silvery voice.

"It's as if you're singing it to someone close." She teases but knowing how right she is about that, Anna has no idea how to react. She just gives her a fake smile as she composes in her mind the right words to oppose what she just said.

"Auntie, t-that's-"

"That's insane Mom." William interrupts her as he gets ready to sing his own go to karaoke song. "There's no one here she'll sing that song for."

Yeah, right. Anna thinks to herself as she gives her best friend a face. She then sees their mothers exchange glances then look at him with a teasing smile.

"Are you sure, my boy?" William nods to his mother. "Not even for you?"

Anna starts to become nervous waiting for his reaction but William just chuckles, something she expects but something that also still hurts.

"Of course not, Mom." Anna stares at him trying to hide the disappointment in her face. "I'm her annoying brother she'll sing 'When we grow up' for." William glances at her and smirks.

Great. I know I'm really not just the best friend. Anna keeps her fake smile as she tries not to sigh and at the same time, look smitten with his handsome smirk.

"That's right Auntie. He's an annoying brother I never really wish to have." She says instead and takes her glass of orange juice while the rest of the people around just laugh at their casual bickering. Then his song begins to play and everyone, including her, is all ears to listen to him sing, 'You're beautiful' by James Blunt.
