31 Chapter 31: Delia (Part 4)

Hmm, while we were walking on the homeless section of the slums, a group of dudes approached us. They were wearing rag clothes, and had full neckbeards, and they also stink a lot.

One of them said, I suspect the leader, this in a nervous voice while holding his stomach in a very awkward way, "Would you be kind to give this corpse to us? We have not eaten since 2 days ago, and human meat is still meat if you think about it, right? B-Besides, you have nothing to get from him anyway. I know what we are doing is wrong but please," He took out a small knife made of flint and pointed it at us, "be kind to give."

Scared for her and her unborn baby's child, also me, she stopped holding Dillan's body as she said, "Y-You can keep his body, but please be kind to bury any of his remains."

The other dudes behind him started salivating at Dillan's corpse, and the one I suspect as the leader said, "Don't worry, I'm not such a monster that I would not properly bury another human being. We'll just take some meat to eat."

Ah, so they're cannibals… what? You know what, the outside world is scary. I swear I'm never going out without Alexander by my side! The f*ck is this sh*t!? Cannibals!? Are you f*cking serious!? I've read about them in the books but to actually see one on the first day I separated from Alexander and the co.!? F*ck this! I'm planning a revolution against the nobles and the royalty of this kingdom to change the economic problems of the people, and actually have a working market that sells cheaper food!

The group of dudes left with Dillan's body, and they'll probably die since he ingested my poison. Anyway, not my problem now.

Delia wiped a tear off her face as she said, "I'm going to miss him. Even though we have been together for 9 months now, and the majority of it he was a huge butthole to me, he was still a nice man when we met for the first time."

Hmm, so Dillan was not an asshole from the first they met? Huh, he probably changed when he lost his leg.

Since we don't need to take the body to the outskirts of the kingdom, she decided to go to her house with me.

The gold bars were still there when we returned since I never stored it in my storage ring for the fear of her finding out about it. She picked up the 5 gold bars on the floor, and put it on top of the chair where Dillan used to sit.

Strange though, she doesn't seem too sad about losing someone close to her.

"Are you sad about Dillan?" I asked, curiosity taking over me.

She shook her head as she cleaned the floor with a ragged cloth because Dillan fell from his chair earlier and dropped his bowl of vegetable soup on the ground.

"My mama used to say that I should be with a man so that I could live comfortably, so Dillan and I became a couple after meeting a few times. I thought he would take care of me but when he lost his leg from a lumbering accident, he suddenly became much more aggressive. He basically took advantage of me when I was sleeping, that's why I got pregnant. I didn't want to have to abort the child, so I kept it. Luckily for me, he didn't hit me or anything, he just verbally abused me. I was tired of it, of course, but what else could I do? He lost his leg because he was trying to earn money for the both of us, and I can't just leave him because he is a cripple and can't do anything on his own. My mama didn't teach me that way." At the end of her words, she started dropping tears to the floor as she was cleaning.

I don't get her reasoning. She was indebted to Dillan because he got injured while working? How is that even a thing? It's obvious that Dillan probably verbally manipulated her feelings by bringing up the reason for his injury every time they talked so that she won't change her mind about taking care of him.

How sad for someone like her to be manipulated by a garbage of a man.

She wiped some of her tears, and said, "I am sorry for talking to you like this even though you're just a child, but I just needed some way to release my pent-up emotions. I'm grateful that you're here, Auguste, or else I would be a crying mess right now. It's bad for the baby if I'm always sad."

Her country accent started to crack as she cried.

I didn't know what to do in this situation, so I just hugged her as she was leaning down to clean the floor, and say, "Don't worry, Delia, everything's going to be okay soon. I promise you that."

A strange conviction could be heard from my voice but she ignored that, and replied, "Hmh, you're a sweet and kind boy, Auguste. You're not even a teenager yet and you're already trying to win an adult woman's heart." She said as a joke, and I let go of her to smile.

She stood up straight, and went to the small kitchen of hers to wash the rag with the water she had in the large wooden container right around the corner.

It's nice to see her calming down a little as she can crack jokes now.

Soon, we sat down together as she inspected the gold bars I gave her, and said as she looked at me, "Keep this to yourself, Auguste. I don't want the people around here to know that there's such an expensive object in my house. As much as I hate to say this, they'll probably go berserk and try to steal these for themselves. I don't need money; I just need enough to survive with my unborn child."

She gave me my gold bars back, and I was stunned. I thought she was just going to accept it like nothing because she has lived in the slums for far too long but how can she refuse these so easily? It's like they are worth nothing in her eyes.

I understand her reasoning though. So I gladly took the gold bars back, and said, "Mhm, that's fine. But since you won't accept the gold bars, then I will be here to protect and take care of you until my family arrives in the kingdom. I'll ask Alexander to take you with us so that your unborn child would be able to grow up properly!"

She rubbed my head, and said, "Haha, that's good. I'm looking forward to that."

While she might not take me seriously, I never go back on my word. I will protect her and take care of her until Alexander and the group arrives in the kingdom. I can't just leave a pregnant woman behind, that's just too cruel of me.

For the rest of the day, she tried to stay as positive as she could, completely forgetting about Dillan for a while.

I was there with her, even at night when we slept together.

I felt like she's the mother I never had as she would try to pamper me, care for me, and baby talk me, even though she's hurting so much inside. While I was satisfied with Alexander being my father-figure, I always wanted the embracement of a mother.

Maybe this is why I'm so concerned towards her; because she is also a mother.
