Chapter 9: Power

The door opened and I entered the room.

"I will be the one assessing your magical power."

A man with a long white beard emerged from the darkness. The man had a staff and on the top of the staff was a small glass ball. The ball was dark and didn't even reflect any light. Light then filled up the room quickly and revealed what else was in the room. The room was large. It was bigger than the whole building so this was probably a pocket dimension.

There were multiple pillars and people sparring. The people didn't stop to look at me, instead, it was as if they couldn't see me.

"Halt." The old man said as everyone stopped and stood in a line and bowed to the old man as he walked towards them. "Clear."

The people then scattered like cockroaches. Soon we were alone in the room.

"Let's sit down." The man said as he sat on the floor. I also sat on the floor. "Most people would sit on their shins with their hands on their thighs but you sat down with your legs crossed. Either your parents taught you no manners or you have a lot of pride."

"Is that part of being analysed?" I asked the man.

"I see you have no interest in small talk so let's begin. Do you know your elemental affinity?"

"No."

"I thought this would be the case." The man muttered to himself. "Sit as if you are meditating or cultivating."

I have seen that position way too many times in manhuas so I am familiar with it. To think I am being helped by humans certainly is something I never expected.

I straightened my back and put my right hand in my left hand to create a circle and closed my eyes.

"Now think of the mana around you." The old man said.

I had done this when I reached my Awakened Form so this was familiar to me. I searched for the mana around me and I then found it. Colourful orbs orbited me: Grey, blue, green, red, white, black, gold, and purple. The colours of the orbs represented the elements and this was probably used to determine which element was my element.

"Now bring the mana towards you and make it orbit you."

I had already done that but it probably meant that I had to make it faster.

"Now make that orbit faster."

I now felt that I shouldn't have done anything the old man didn't say to do.

The old man stopped saying anything but I could see the light even though my eyes were closed.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

I opened my eyes to see the old man looking at me in awe. Hera also looked at me but in fear.

"Who are you?" Hera asked in fear.

I now realised that I was in my Awakened Form. My white hair flowing in the air as if I was underwater and black horns stuck out of my head. My red eyes stared at the old man as he stared back. I then saw eight orbs orbit me.

"You have all of them!" The old man exclaimed.

"I'm not strong. Even if I have all of the elements I'm not that strong." I said.

"We'll test that now then!"

The old man was extremely confident that I am a prodigy. In a way I was but it's not here. Here I was a regular guy with an affinity with all the elements and in this world, I'm just fiction.

The old man got up from the floor and I did as well. I was still in my Awakened Form.

"Maintain those orbs and make them as small as you can."

Without thinking I made them so small that they couldn't be seen with a normal eye. It looked like steam was being emitted from the air but it was being emitted from the orbs.

"Now make them grow back to their normal size." Instantly, I made them back to their original size. "Now shoot the orbs at each of the pillars. Make sure only one orb hits one pillar."

There were multiple pillars that I could hit so I chose randomly. The orbs traveled through the air and hit the pillars. The orbs went through the pillars, leaving a hole. The orbs then returned to me.

The old man was then completely amazed by my abilities.

"You're a Class 8 mage."

"CLASS 8!" I yelled. "How can I be a Class 8 mage? I'm supposed to be average!"

There were twelve classes ranging from 1-12. 1 being the weakest and 12 being the strongest. An average person's class ranges from 4-6 while 7 being gifted and 8 being a prodigy. I couldn't find out someone's class because my skills that can be used on other people didn't work here. A Class 8 mage of my age could enroll in the best schools with a scholarship.

Why the hell did Socrates say I'm weak?

"You're only one class higher than me and you're only sixteen." The old man said. "Not only that but you have all eight elements at your disposal."

No. I wanted to be average for once. I wanted this to be different. I didn't want to be an overpowered character. Why was fate so cruel?

"Levantes, tell everyone that you are a Class 5 mage. This isn't because of my pride but because people will come for you. You will be taken into the army. Everyone knows about the war but they are trying to hide it and not only that but you're a demon. I didn't know you were a demon because your horns are the same colour as your hair so hide your horns. Demons are incredibly hated in our society."

The war was against demons? Socrates didn't tell me that.

"Thank you for the advice. I will leave now."

"Also change your clothes."

I had forgotten about my clothes. My clothes made me stand out which was something I had to avoid. I had never hid from others out of fear so this was something new to me. My life was on the line and if I valued my life I would have to lay low until my training with Socrates is finished.

I snapped my fingers and the robes changed colours. They were now black. My form also changed back to my original form.

"You need a weapon as well."

"You shouldn't worry about that." I said as I left the room.

I found Rena still waiting in her chair silently as if she was zoned out.

"Rena?" I called. Rena flinched and looked startled as I poked her.

"Oh. Are you done?"

"That's why I'm out."

"So what are you then?"

"My elemental affinity is wind and I'm a Class 5 mage." I said as we walked out of the room into the reception place of the Adventurers Guild. This world didn't have things such as decurias as everyone was basically an all-rounder.

"Oh. You're pretty strong then."

"What are you?" I asked.

"Oh. You want to know mine?" Rena said with a smug grin on her face. "I'm a dual elementalist; Fire and Water and I'm a Class 6 mage." Rena said with her hands on her hips.

"Oh that's nice." I said, noticing Rena's hubristic behaviour but I didn't react to it.

"Oh, you're finally out. What class are you?" Kryius said, mockingly.

"I'm a-" Before I could say anything Hera came to "save" the day.

"He's a Class 8 mage with an affinity with all eight elements so I wouldn't do anything as little as touching him if I was you. That's if you can."

"You're…a…you're joking…" Kryius couldn't get anything out of his mouth. Everyone else stared at me with fear, even Rena.

"I'm obviously joking." Hera said but she didn't act as if she was joking.

"Why the hell would you say something like that?"

No one had any doubts that Hera was lying or joking. Everyone just believed.

"So then, let's fight, Adynamos."

That surname killed me. I don't know why I chose it but I did and since then I've used it as an alias. It meant weak in greek and calling myself weak didn't do anything but anytime anyone would call me by that almost made me laugh.

"Fine. Choose the time and place."

"Let's go outside then. Do it there."

We went outside and Kryius wasted no time. He threw a punch at me but I caught it but he threw another punch with his other arm. He threw first with his right arm so that was his dominant hand. If I attacked his right side then I would have the advantage in this fight. If he did the same it would be useless as I was ambidextrous.

I threw a wind blade at him but it only cut him a bit. I was controlling my power to a Class 5 mage but I would lose this fight if I only used power as Kryius was a Class 6 mage. I had to set traps. Using only wind magic at the level of a Class 5 mage against a Class 6 mage would end in my loss.

I threw a couple more wind blades and evaded Kryius's punches. He then changed his strategy. He created pillars from the ground. Earth magic. The pillars tried to trap me and grew taller by the second. It was useless. I went through the pillars with one of my many skills and attacked Kryius. He was confident in his strategy but his ignorance made him lose. As soon as he saw me going through his pillars he quickly reacted by creating a pillar between us. He then broke the pillar with a greatsword made from the same stone as the floor. I dodged the greatsword but the edge of the blade cut my cheek. There was a line of blood on my cheek. I quickly tried healing it but it didn't work. I quickly threw myself into the air with my wind magic and escaped Kryius's second attack. It didn't stop Kryius from attacking as he threw spikes of stone at me. I dodged some but soon the spikes of stone raining upon me. I tried dodging the spikes but they still managed to cut me.

I could tell the old man and Socrates were both watching me. They knew I had potential and Socrates could read my mind so there was no hiding from him.

In my world there was an ability that wind magic had; Oxygen Manipulation. This ability could manipulate the oxygen in an area. If I used this I could suffocate Kryius.

I threw a couple of wind blades at Kryius and threw him around. It was hard because of how much Kryius weighed but I had to be patient for victory.

"HOW LONG ARE YOU GOING TO BE A COWARD FOR?!"

I brought myself to the ground and walked toward Kyrius. I brought my hand in front of me and closed it. Kyrius looked confused but then he felt it. The oxygen slowly left his body and the area around him.

"Do you yield?" I asked Kyrius.

Obviously Kyrius couldn't say that he yields. His pride and the lack of oxygen stopped him from saying it.

Kyrius then stopped struggling. I didn't intend to kill anyone and now that I have what would happen? What will be the consequences?

Everyone stared at Kyrius's lifeless body drop to the ground. No one moved nor did anyone speak.

Silence.

I was about to walk to Kyrius when the unexpected happened. Kyrius's body moved. It wasn't much but it was enough to know he was alive but how? I didn't let the oxygen go into the area where Kyrius lay so he couldn't have regenerated.

Kyrius stood up but he did it in a way that it wasn't normal. No normal person got up from the ground like that. It was almost as if he was attached to strings that were being pulled. Kyrius's eyes were blood red and his face remained expressionless.

I felt Kyrius's power increase. Although I couldn't see people's abilities or strength I could feel it. It was something I picked up during my time in Gehenna. Being the prodigy of the First Generation meant I had to have supernatural abilities.

Kyrius lunged himself toward me but I dodged him. His movements were slow and it was as if he couldn't control his movements properly. Kyrius then went for another attack but the old man teleported between us and threw Kyrius away.

"Take everyone and run! GO FROM THIS VILLAGE!" The old man said as everyone then escaped, leaving the old man to fight Kyrius on his own.

Rena and I ran for our lives, running through the village and alerting everyone we found.

"Rena, you take everyone and find somewhere, I'll go help the old man."

"What! Why? You can't! You'll die!"

"I won't, as Hera said, I'm a Class 8 mage with all eight elements."

I knew it was illogical. I wouldn't die and it wasn't like me to protect random people but by doing this people would trust me. People like Rena would see me as a heroic figure so then I would have some people who are on my side. I knew I won't die from this and if I was a valuable piece in war then Socrates wouldn't let me die.

I ran back to help the old man but I was too late. In such a short amount of time, Kyrius had already killed the old man and was eating his organs. My magic didn't work on anyone unless it was to attack them so reversing time wouldn't work on the old man. I couldn't bring the old man back to life but there were people—who I could use later in the future—that trusted me with their lives. If this being in front of me is capable of killing that old man then these normal people would die instantly.

It is here where I use these "average" powers.
