Lou was supposed to be with Cane, because Iris had asked him a favor to keep his eyes on her mate, in which he begrudgingly accepted it, because when she pleaded with him, she looked like she was on the verge of breaking down and Lou hated it to see her very vulnerable and distress like that. 

However, because Cane was within the pack fortress and the battle had not yet broken out, he didn't to be so close with the alpha, being so close with him only gave him goosebumps. 

And this news arrived, Cane knew Iris would hear it sooner or later, thus he told Lou to go to Iris and stopped her from doing anything reckless, as if he could predict what his mate would.
