Chapter- Four

My life turned pretty normal. There was no more some random dude sending me weird texts. There was no more playing the damsel in distress. Now that I thought about it, my life was pretty boring. Nothing exciting ever really happened in my life.

It was Tuesday and I was doing my homework. Yes, I do my homework too. I would love to say that I was a sincere student who always did her work on time, but no, I was just bored so I decided to do my homework that I definitely was supposed to submit last week.

It was better late than never, I suppose.

I wonder if the teacher would accept it.

It was when I was wondering what the heck did I learn in class to not know anything that was written in the paper, that my phone rang. I received it without any hesitation thinking it was Ashley.

“Babe, did you miss me?”

I immediately hung up.

He called again. This time I checked the caller’s name. Yes, it was the dude that texted me that other day.

“Damn, you can’t even take a joke.” He said, I could hear the amusement in his voice. I wondered if I had met him as his voice sounded a little familiar. But then I shook my head. How many people did I know anyway?

“Maybe you should learn how to say hello like a normal person first.” I countered. I could hear him laugh on the other side. Yeah, his laugh was attractive.

“I’d keep that in mind. I have a question for you by the way.”

I raised my eyebrow, “Yeah?” I was hoping he would not ask me to rate his picture once again.

“So I just realized I have zero female friends,” he let out a dramatic sigh and I wanted to retort that I was not his friend either, but I didn’t , “I hope you can help me out.” He continued, “What do you think will be a nice gift for an eleven year old girl?”

An eleven year old? I wondered if he had a sister. If yes, then he would have been thinking about a gift for his sister and that was such a lovely thought.

“Hmmm, let me think.” I rubbed my chin because I was the deepest thinker to ever exist and that was my signature move.

“What does she like?” And, there went the most common question of the century.

“I don’t know. I don’t understand what she talks about most of the time.” I laughed out loud at his admission. It was true though. Eleven was so far away for most of us that it seemed like some kind of fever dream, and eleven year olds.. they seem so small to us now.

“Yeah, eleven year olds are weird.” I agreed.

“I know, don’t tell my sister this but she is so weird, but I love her to death though.”

I laughed softly, “Yeah, I won’t.” “Alright, so what do you think should be a good gift for her?”

“Does she like anything? Boybands? Tv shows?” I leaned back against my chair, started playing with my hair and started to think at the same time.

“She likes to read, but I don’t want to give her books. She has like thousands of books.”

“What about matching jewelry?” I asked him, as I remembered how Ashley gave me a matching necklace set on my fifteenth birthday. I still treasure it and whenever we go out to have fun, we both still wear it. It was our thing, and it was special for the both of us.

“What do you mean?”

“Suppose, you give her a bracelet and you also buy an identical one, and that would be your thing. Won’t it be cute?”

“Wow, yes! That’s it!” He sounded excited, “Thank you!” Then he hung up. The ending of the call was abrupt, I was left a little dumbfounded. I stared at my phone for a second before shaking my head.

I hoped he would find the perfect gift.

Then instead of doing my homework, I decided to call Ashley, “Guess what happened?”

“Don’t tell me he texted you again?”

“Yes,” then I proceeded to tell her all about what happened today.

It was our English class, and I knew the teacher had planned something when I saw her face the moment she walked in.

“I want you all to work in a pair of two.” Alright. I made eye contact with Ashley as it was only acceptable if my partner was her an- “I will make the pairs,” Miss Wilson said with a smile and the whole class let out a collective groan.

“Okay,” She clapped happily, and ignored all our grunts of displeasure. “Now, I would just like you and your partner to do a small task. Read one short story for seven days and write a summary of it. Your partner will grade it everyday. As I start calling out your and your partner’s name, please go and sit near them.”

“I am going to call out your name and your partner’s. Listen carefully.” I was hoping that even after this I would end up with Ashley but my hope was shattered when she got paired with an Asian girl. I sighed. Now, I was waiting for my name to be called out.

“Violet and Matthew, Emma and-,” I zoned out as I thought about who this Matthew was. I was trying really hard to remember when a blonde haired guy walked towards me. Oh. Of course.

Of course, it would be one of Isaac’s best friends. I didn’t realize he knew who I was.

He sat down on the seat next to me, “Hey.”

“Hi.” I greeted him back. Fuck, I must socialize with a new person again.

Miss Wilson clapped her hands again, “Alright, everyone settle down. Make sure you become friends with your partner. I need it by next week.”

I knew the only reason Miss Wilson gave us this task to do is because she knew the class was not getting along well. We all were divided into our own friend groups, and the students didn’t talk to anyone besides someone from their own group.

“Any particular author you want to read?” Matthew asked me, snapping me out of my thoughts. He had a smile on his face, and I found myself relaxing a bit. Matthew was handsome. Whenever I would see Isaac and his two friends, I always thought that Matthew looked the friendliest because he would always have a smile on his face.

I thought for a moment, “Not really, I was planning on searching on the internet.”

He chuckled, “So do I.”

Then he gave me a grin. Wow, he really keeps on smiling.

“So, friends? I have a feeling this carries no marking. I think she just wants the student to socialize.”

I nodded my head, “Me too.”

I must make new friends, it was true. It was my last year in highschool, and I was still only friends with Ashley. The rest all were acquaintances. It won't hurt to make new friends, I thought to myself.

Alright, Violet, you can do this.
