The Abyss (Teaser)

Preface

Present Day

They worked well together. Sometimes too well. Both were recently promoted and eager to take their first command together as co-pilots. They both thought it was going to be a first easy joint command and joint mission. Neither of them was prepared for what was about to happen next. How could they possibly prepare for what they could never imagine was possible? This would both change their collective and independent futures.

They both envisioned a smooth flight. A smooth transition. It was something they both did regularly. There was something quiet and serene about the entire situation. Maybe it was complacency. Maybe it was each of them taking for granted their individual routines being placed together that could hopefully ensure everything that happened occurred like a textbook example. Maybe it was that they both secretly wished and prayed for something to happen that would make one of them into a mission savior. Who really knew what it was.

They each cast their own internal dialogue aside and embraced the verbal conversations that were happening around them. The conversation that mattered in that moment. The conversation that would get them into a launched mission. The conversation that would actually start their mission. The end of the simulations. It was time.

Simulations were all successful. It was go time. Mission start is next. One final pre-check. The time is now. Their time is now.

Mission launch approval acquired.

Now they wait. It was only the beginning. The beginning of a mission that would change everything. Forever. For everyone
