Chapter 14

A lightning bolt careened down from the heavens and crashed into a ball field, ahead of us and on the right. Both Harry and I jumped in our seats as the truck rocked to and fro. The flash of golden-yellow-white light cut off his comment. He swerved the truck ever so slightly to the left, and eventually gained control over its bulk once again, in a matter of seconds. In silence, perhaps shaken by our Ravenrock conversation and the close bolt of lightning, Harry continued driving, returning us unharmed to his bar.

Parked in front of the pub on Cast Street, the wipers on the truck flicked to and fro. He kindly asked, “Should I ride you to where you’re staying?”

“Thanks, but I’m only three blocks away.”

“Tell me where. Stay in the truck and keep dry. The storm’s rough.”

I wanted to tell him that maybe New York City guys liked it rough but kept the thought to myself. I stayed seated beside him. “It’s 382 Sutten.”

He drove me home, parking out front of the small salt box.
