The MC

Count Grace was known for his love of books. So much so that almost the entirety of the Grace residence was covered with bookshelves filled with books without an inch empty. People said he literally lived inside a library; a dream of most readers.

Though much less than himself, his wife shared the same passion for reading. However, her domain of interest was limited to fiction. Unlike her husband who devoured any book he could get his hands on, she had a more refined taste for well-written and witty fiction. The genre mattered much less to her as long as the writer had a good way with his words.

Raised in such a household where there were more books than furniture in the house, the two daughters of this loving couple grew up with a love of reading as well. The elder one was Amelia and the younger one was Evelyn.

Count Grace had distinct red hair which signified the direct bloodline of the Grace family. Both Amelia and Evelyn had red hair too, but Evelyn's hair was bright red and darker in that shade than any other member of the family. This played quite a crucial role in her becoming the most loved member of the family.

It wasn't because the darker red hair proved the higher purity of her bloodline. It was simply because she looked that endearing in that bright shade of red hair. 'Adorable' defined her childhood and 'gorgeous' her adolescence.

Amelia had a much similar taste in reading to her mother while Evelyn's obsession with books was the spitting image of her father. Count Grace and Evelyn would spend hours and days locked in the study, analyzing and reading exotic and rare books. Knowledge was one thing, but the experience of traveling to another world through reading was what Evelyn loved the most.

Due to this, her sudden change in temperament towards the books she loved so much shocked everyone.

It was a few months ago that Evelyn fell ill and went unconscious for days. When she woke up, everyone was more shocked than relieved. It seemed as if an entirely different person had woken up. She didn't remember her name and age. She was more shocked to see her face and surroundings than the fact that she almost died. After examination, the physician informed them that she was suffering from amnesia with little chance of ever regaining her memories.

After the first few weeks of confusion, it seemed as if Evelyn had adjusted back to her normal life. Just for the fact that now she hated the very sight of books.

'The root of all her troubles' was what she called them.

But then, she suddenly started visiting a library. The Grace family thought that maybe her love of books was still inside her somewhere which kept her being driven to a library. It was a library near capitol square, called The Brooklyn Library.

Then one day, she abruptly stopped visiting it and started burying herself in the ancient and rare books about history that she used to read with her father.

'A glimpse of what she read there before with her father came in her dream' was what she stated as the reason.

The physician declared that she might be getting her memories back little by little. The family supported Evelyn all through her bizarre actions in hopes that she could get better.

'Getting memories back, my ass!' Evelyn yelled at the physician in front of her in her mind. 'He's clearly a quack.'

Evelyn was hiding a very deep secret in her heart. A secret she could not disclose to any soul in this world. THIS world as she meant. For her, it wasn't a real world after all. It was the world of a novel she read at the end of her world.

The novel was called 'From Darkness to Darkness'. It was written by the only survivor of the monster eradication mission in her world and the only other person alive besides herself.

Evelyn's real name was Park Jia. She was from South Korea, a normal college student. She was quite happy with her life. Loving parents, close siblings, a handsome boyfriend, and a good offer letter for a job. Park Jia was living life in easy mode.

That was until the fall of the year 2046. The sky disappeared. Earth's atmosphere began to shrink. As the researchers sought to find out why it was happening, a terrifying truth came to light. Earth's gravity was declining as well as its spin rate. In the fall of 2049, Earth stopped spinning completely. As there was no magnetic field because the rotation of Earth stopped, there was nothing left to protect Earth from the solar wind of the sun.

Those who couldn't escape the sunny side of the earth in time, mutated because of the solar radiation, turning into monsters that ate any living being regardless of their species.

The people left on the darker side of Earth had to survive the harsh climate changes as well as the continuous monster waves. Humanity wasn't prepared for such an apocalypse. In just three years, a whopping 70% of the human population was wiped out.

A party of a thousand people with mutations that didn't turn them into monsters but superhumans was sent to the sunny side to eradicate the monsters. Only one person from that party returned alive.

No one was left alive on the darker side by the time it all ended. Only Jia and this person. The person had written a novel while fighting those monsters on the sunny side. Jia gladly agreed to be that person's first and last reader. She started reading it in a heartbeat.

But as she kept reading the novel, she felt nauseous. And when she closed the book after finishing it, she fell unconscious.

She was in the body of Evelyn Grace when she woke up. It didn't take her much more than a few weeks to realize that she was inside the novel written by that person that she read before falling unconscious.

As soon as she realized it, her first step was to see the female protagonist of the novel, Julia Shuzar. Evelyn went to the Brooklyn library just to sneak a peek at Julia and confirm where exactly in the novel's timeline she was. She had no idea since Evelyn Grace was a character that was never mentioned in the novel.

But she was seen by Julia and had to make a run for it. She had but achieved her goal as she saw Julia was still yet a child. She then started to read history books to know all about the place and jot down all she could remember of the novel inside the study.

And yet again, here she was, in front of the very female lead, Julia Shuzar, with an ancient book that explained the working of the border dungeons. Why, if you must ask? That was because there was no way Evelyn could let Ignis die.

Why?

The reason why Evelyn couldn't let Ignis die was simple. Ignis was the protagonist of the world, of that novel. Ignis Blaqua was the main character of 'From Darkness to Darkness'.
