Test of the Divine

In a world filled with uncaring Gods and oblivious mortals, Damon is on a quest for revenge. After his entire life was upended by a callous God, he has been searching for the power he needs to save his friends. Will his new godly powers be able to help him resist the tides of fate, or will he be swept away? Thanks for taking the time to read the synopsis. I’m a new writer and so I’d like to hear any feedback from you guys. My upload schedule also might be spotty since I have exams and AP tests coming up but I will do my best to keep it to around one chapter a day. I hope you enjoy. I do not own this cover art. If the owner wishes for me to take it down, please contact me. I plan to upload chapters at 21:00 UTC. I’m still trying to work with the weird time zone conversion so it may vary.

The Unsung Hero

Yawning, Damon climbed out of bed and prepared for a day's work.

After 15 minutes, he was nearly finished. Deciding to make sure he was presentable for the horde of monsters that surely awaited, Damon walked over to the mirror.

Staring back at him, was a man whose hair was a dark black and skin was as pale as a porcelain doll. He was wearing a dark tunic and pants that complimented his purple eyes.

Satisfied with his attire, Damon grabbed his greatsword sheath and javelin bag.

Putting them on, he sheathed his greatsword onto his back and loaded the javelins into the bag.

'I'll clear out the hordes that are likely outside and then start making a map regarding this world.' Damon planned.

As he walked downstairs, Damon could hear the distant sounds of his artillery firing.

THRUM

BOOM

Damon opened his door and saw a cloud of black surge through the golden barrier.

The various artillery pieces roared as bolts of fire and lightning lit up the sky.

BOOM

Damon's sight was blocked by dust as the knights launched into the fray.

As the dust cleared, Damon saw several massive ravens plummet towards the ground.

In their place, the two knights, eyes filled with a malicious crimson, began cutting into the horde. Each of their swings left gigantic holes in the dark mass.

With an excited grin, Damon jumped into the fray.

His first target was the purple raven that led the horde.

'This one is a Monster, Damon. It's one level above the Fiend you fought previously.' James informed him.

As Damon flew forward, the raven inspected the ant that flew toward it.

Readying its spiritual energy, the raven dove toward the ant.

In response, Damon drew his greatsword as he prepared for a clash. Once Damon was within range, he began channeling a small amount of divine energy into the sword.

Damon prepared his swing in order to cut off the raven's right wing. As he aimed, however, a mass of silver spikes appeared behind the raven.

Damon's eyes flashed as he swung his sword horizontally from the right to the left.

Following his swing, a massive wall of fire roared and melted the silver spikes into molten metal.

Meanwhile, Damon activated his thrusters as he switched to his soul view.

Almost immediately, a black mass of energy surged towards him.

Concluding that this mass of energy was the raven, Damon filled his sword with essence as he rapidly descended.

Damon could feel the searing heat of the crimson flames singe his clothes as he soared ahead.

Right as he was almost flying through the flames, Damon quickly created a thick wall of water. This water briefly made a hole in the wall of flame which he would exploit.

Shooting through the opening, Damon and the raven were rapidly moving closer.

Damon prepared his sunken reserves as he created an immense blaze around his blade. This almost immediately halved his reserves but Damon was determined to end the fight here.

The fire now seared Damon's skin and evaporated all of the sweat that covered his body.

"Ahhhhhh!' Damon screamed as he prepared a upward swing.

Meeting his strike, the raven swooped down towards him with it's talons outstretched.

Executing his swing, Damon activated his thrusters and met the raven's talons.

SHING

With eyes wide in horror, Damon watched as the sword failed to cut past the talons.

Shaking away his fear, he quickly tried to disengage and fully activated his thrusters.

CAW

The raven's beak was quickly closing in and Damon was forced to make a choice.

Abandon his sword? Or create something to block the raven's beak?

"I won't retreat until I have to!" Damon yelled.

Determination filling his eyes, Damon created and launched a mass of earth toward the raven's beak.

Damon then used the momentum of his thrusters to pull his sword from the depths of the raven's talons. With this, he decided to attack while the raven was preoccupied by the mass of earth he had thrown.

Executing a quick backflip, Damon dashed towards the neck of the raven. This time, however, he used every bit of his essence to empower the sword.

Blue fire erupting from his sword, Damon closed in on the neck and swung with all of his might.

"AHHHH!" He yelled as he exerted all of his strength.

Like a hot knife through butter, the raven's neck was immediately severed as Damon lost control and shot into the distance.

He narrowly dodged many projectiles and was able to tank the bites from the smaller ravens due to his armor. Luckily though, the horde had considerably thinned thanks to the efforts of his turrets and knights.

Slowly regaining control, Damon reactivated his thrusters and landed on the roof of the manor.

As the adrenaline wore off, Damon felt the scars of his battle.

"Ahhhhh!" Damon screamed as he collapsed to the ground. His entire body was covered in burns and the right side of his body had burned so badly that one could even see the bone.

During his struggle...

BOOM

A loud sonic boom sounded, followed by a bright flash of light.

Opening his scalded eyes, Damon saw a man dressed in full golden armor and wearing a sad look land.

"Now I really wanted to make a heroic entrance, but you just had to ruin it." The man joked.

"Who are you?" Damon croaked.

"I'm your supervisor, but for now on, you can just call me Hero." He answered with a grin.

In response, Damon's eyes shot open in horror,

'Isn't he the one who decides whether or not I will fail or pass this test?' Damon thought as he began panicking. The man who would decide his future, just had to appear when he was at his weakest.

"I understand that look in your eyes. You don't need to worry though. Just think of me as your supervisor while you are the employee at a new job." The man said as he reassured Damon.

"Of course I'm worried! My new supervisor just saw me get beat up and nearly fail at my job." Damon reasoned.

"Don't sweat the small stuff, Damon. You're a planetary governor now and you should act like one. Besides, I'll be observing you for the foreseeable future. Not just today."

"For how.... long?" Damon questioned as his speech began to slur.

"We'll get into all of the details later. For now, go to sleep and I'll heal you up in the meantime. You're already succumbing to exhaustion anyways."

Just as the Hero stopped talking, Damon passed out and entered the lands of clouds and hope.

"We'll have a very very interesting future ahead of us, Damon." Hero said as he dragged Damon inside.

Today, I introduced Hero and he will be the first person Damon has talked to for a while. I hope you enjoyed his 'interesting' personality that we'll explore much more in depth tomorrow. I hope you enjoyed the chapter.
