Chapter 9

Poe has two boxes of paper—and hardbacks that won’t sell. They’ve been on the discount rack for three months and he’s tired of watching me dust them. One sunny day in May he asks me, “Do you know what yard libraries are?”

I nod, anticipating his next comments. “They’re called Little Free Libraries. They’re all over the world. Small red, green, blue, or yellow wooden boxes in neighborhood front yards where you can take a book to read, or give a book to read. It’s a free community service.”

“Exactly. Are you familiar with their website?”

I nod again. “I’ve used it a few times.”

“Good. Use it again. Particularly the map page. Find a few local libraries and ditch the two boxes of discounted books we can’t sell.” He tosses me the car keys to his Kia Soul. “Don’t damage my baby.”

“I won’t dare.”
