They walked out to the meadow to utter stillness, broken only by the occasional breeze. Even the birds weren't singing yet. It was as if WildWood held its breath waiting to hear what her father would say, just like she did.

He'd grabbed a blanket from the back of one of the couches, and spread it out for them in the middle of the meadow, then lay down, facing the mountain range that loomed over the WildWood to the South and West…

The sky overhead was still deep black, but the mountain peaks were just beginning to glow gray.

Her father sat down and Elreth settled herself next to him, curling her knees up to her chest and hugging them, her thigh brushing his, his arm behind her back.

Elreth watched the light behind the mountains, waiting to see it change. Her father watched her, waiting.
