16 Tangled With the Pack

Red POV.

Mr. Morris suddenly stopped walking and because of this, my memory was jolted out of its recollection. As I watched Mr. Morris staring into the middle of the forest where we were going, I couldn't help but frown as I saw fear and hesitation on his face.

"What exactly is the problem?" I inquired while grabbing the bottom of his jacket.

Howls could be heard coming from the neighborhood even before Mr. Morris had a chance to respond.

"This is the edge of the territory inhabited by vampires... As Morris turned his attention to me, he explained. "The area we're going to tread is wolf territory, so it's more dangerous and difficult for you to traverse there."

As I stood there looking at the location, I found it impossible to hold back my depression. Is there no other way? I don't want to end up in the tummy of wolves..."

Mr. Morris let out a long sigh while shaking his head. "This is the only road we can take," he said as he took hold of my shoulder and led me to a tree that had fallen over. "Then we'll just have to wait for the sun to come out... Traveling during the day would be better for your safety and convenience."

While I was considering the appropriate action to take, I took another glance at my surroundings. If we remain here, there is a chance that vampires will track us down, and then death will be waiting for us.

After giving it some thought, I respond, "I believe we need to go... We have a better chance if we go on this path rather than staying here, waiting for uncle Marco's disciple..."

"You are correct... the better chance of surviving is to take that path rather than staying here..." Mr. Morris is on board with this and encourages me to take the stand. "But before we can move on, we need to make our way to this location first..."

My expression of surprise changed as I looked at Mr. Morris. Since this was my first excursion outside the castle, I had no idea where he was referring to when he mentioned it.

We explored the area until we found the location that Mr. Morris was talking about. As I look at the row of rocks, which has a wooden cross in the middle, I can't help but frown. There is an abundance of grasses and wildflowers in the surrounding area.

"Is this a cemetery? Whose grave is this?" I inquired while looking over at Mr. Morris.

"When your mother gave you to me 18 years ago, she was sick and frail, but despite her condition, she could keep you safe despite the circumstances. Your mother casts a spell before she takes her last breath, saying, "I keep you safe until you reach the right age..." before she passes away. Mr. Morris narrates. "Holding you in my palm as I did so, I buried her there..."

"This is where my mother is..." I mutter as my eyes start to well up with tears. It has been a longtime goal of mine to pay a visit to my mother, and I was finally able to do so. As I put my hand on the wooden cross, I experience a sense of release. I have no idea, but I can see my mother beaming at me in my head.

"Mom, I want to promise you that I will have a happy life. I will overcome every difficulty that comes my way. I will eventually have a joyful family. So keep an eye on me in heaven and guide me..."

Mr. Morris permitted me to spend some time talking to my mother's grave... And I wish to express my gratitude. Nevertheless, as soon as I hear a howl off in the distance, I hastily bid farewell to my mother and go up to Mr. Morris.

I was tense as I examined the surrounding area and murmured, "I think it's near us."

"You're correct. The howl is only a short distance away, so we have to get going," Mr. Morris quick respond.

"Grr ..."

Mr. Morris grabs my hand to start running, but just as we are about to take our first step, a lone black wolf materializes in the shadowy portion of the forest. Its icy blue eyes were fixed maliciously on Mr. Morris while its pointed fangs were poised to bite.

Mr. Morris said, "Don't worry, it's alone... I can easily defeat this wolf," as he blocked his body in front of me to protect me.

"Grr... grr..."

But the two of us were taken aback when another wolf materialized out of the shadows. And then another one, and another one, until there was five total.

Mr. Morris says, "Red, I'll try to hold on to them, so prepare yourself to escape," He is getting ready for a fight that will undoubtedly end in his death.

"No way! You are my only family, so I won't let you perish in this place! I'll assist you in your battle against them!" I respond firmly. Despite this, my legs began to shake as I stared at the enormous wolves that were approaching us step by step.

When I turn my back on Mr. Morris and face the wolves, he is helpless to stop the situation. Even though I can see the defiance in his eyes, I know that he will have no choice but to accept my assistance. "What about the power you possess? Can you use it?" Morris questioned me about it, keeping in mind the power I wield inside the cage.

Indeed, he is right! There is a way to survive death, but how can this be done? I am at a loss as to how to bring forth my potential. "Mr. Morris, I am at a loss as to how to bring forth my magic..." I confess.

After giving it some thought, Morris looked at the necklace that was hanging around my neck. "That's right! Your necklace! When I brought you to the castle, Lady Victoria intended to kill you, but your necklace prevented her from doing so. I will never forget that."

"Therefore, it indicates that I lack power... My mother is the one who is rescuing me, "I mutter as I gaze at my mother's graveyard.

Mr. Morris knew this, so he immediately began thinking and calculating the situation. The fact that he will have me as his assistant will make our deaths less difficult. The more he couldn't focus on fighting because Mr. Morris was still concerned about my safety.

After deciding what course of action to take, Mr. Morris growls and murmurs, "Red, ride on my back."

"Huh? I thought-" Before I could finish my response, Mr. Morris yanked me from my feet and took off like a bird out of the sky.

The black wolf with the blue eyes let out a long and loud howl... Following that, the pack dashed after Mr. Morris and me.

"Mr. Morris, there is no way for us to get away from them. They're fast!" I declare seeing the group remain tailing us at a short distance.

Morris says, "You're right, so I need to find a place for you to hide." He does this while looking around.

I was terrified, but I refused to say no. I knew it would be better if I weren't with Mr. Morris. If I'm not with him, there is a possibility that we can survive tonight. "Just promise me you won't die ..." I attempted to reason with Mr. Morris.

Mr. Morris smirked, and a nod pushed the run's pace further. The gap between the wolves and us grew slightly wider.

"There! Inside the cave, I believe you won't be in any danger..."

I turned my head to the front of us and saw a small cave you probably would overlook because thick leaves covered it.

As we entered the cavern, Mr. Morris gave me a stern order: "I'll try to mislead them, so stay here until dawn." He said this as he led me in.

"Mr. Morris, I need you to swear that you will come back..." I clung to his hand as he made his way out of the cave.

Mr. Morris let out a long sigh. "If I am unable to return immediately, please leave this location... If I am lucky enough to live, I will track you down..."

Mr. Morris forcefully removed my hand, holding him back. I attempted to get his attention by saying, "Mr. Morris..." but he did not respond to me. Mr. Morris repaired the tangled leaves on our entryway and returned them to their original location.

"Why do I always bring bad luck? First, my mother; she died trying to protect me; Then Catherine- the only friend I have-and now, Mr. Morris... He's in danger because of me," I said while sitting on the cold ground of the cave.

"Aw-oooh!!!"

I feel horror hearing the roar outside the cave. (The wolf found me!) I utter to myself in terror.
