Chapter 12

(Finn pov)

Today had been a normal day, up till this point at least.

It started like any other, waking up before the sun, and getting to work. I did my morning exercises, ate a quick but hearty breakfast, and went to my office to do my duties as the captain of the Loki familia, made sure Loki didn't harass too many girls too much, signed papers, etc.

That all changed when a guild representative showed up at the gates of the Twilight manor, and asked to speak to me.

I didn't think much of it at the time, most of the time when a guild representative comes to the manor it is just to give us personal missions, ask us to sign documents, etc, but what really surprised me was when the man told me that I, along with Riveria –My vice captain– And Loki herself were summoned to interrogate a potentially dangerous person who had arrived in the city just earlier.

This immediately struck me as strange, after all, while its normal for the guild to contract adventurers to help in interrogations of dangerous criminals as a safety measure, it was very uncommon for them to contract higher level adventurers, especially those in big familia's, so having them summon two level 6's of the Loki familia was beyond strange, although the representative assured me it was simply a safety precaution, as while they highly doubted the suspect would be able to fight even one of us, they had displayed potentially worrying abilities, namely a described phenomenon that afflicted everyone within 100 meters of him when he was told he would be arrested, causing everyone in the vicinity, including a nearby minor god, to find themselves unable to move, or even breath.

An ability that I admit, did worry me.

Fortunately we were offered quite the hefty sum in exchange for our time, and it's always a good idea not to anger the guild, even if they are weaker than us in pure strength, their influence is undeniable as the main law keeping entity for adventurers.

We quickly went to the guard post that was currently holding the suspect, and were guided to the holding cell, a feeble looking cell block made of cheap materials. I can only be glad that the suspect came without a fight, otherwise if they were even as low as level two they could easily pull apart these bars.

We were then brought before a separate door, leading to another area holding the suspect, and the guard guiding us, a dwarf, stopped and turned to us.

"Allright, he's in here."

(Loki pov)

Today had been strange, don't get me wrong, there was nothing inherently suspicious about it, or abnormal, at least at the start.

The day started like any other, waking up hungover from sneaking out the previous night to go drinking, harassing the girls of my familia, the usual. No what made things strange was what happened later.

I, along with Finn and Riveria, were summoned by a guild representative to interrogate a potentially dangerous individual, which was very strange.

Usually we as the Loki familia were left on our own by the guild, who would contract other adventurers for their own needs, the fact that they would summon not just me, but my familia captain and vice captain, was strange to say the least.

Finn had a very serious look on his face as we walked towards the guard post, likely finding the situation just as strange as I did. After all, having 2 level 6 adventurers and a god interrogating someone seems overkill.

"Allright, he's in here. We Don't know anything about him, and checking the city logs he seems to have entered the city just hours ago. We caught him trying to use a large magic stone as currency, before attempting to use a large gold nugget when refused, and as such, caught the guards attention, who then arrested him under suspicion of theft.

Now normally we would never call in people like yourselves for something this benign, but what happened next is why we have you here, as supposedly upon stating their intention to arrest the man, everyone in the immediate vicinity was suddenly overcome with a heavy, inexplicable fear, as if they were standing in front of a high tier monster, with many finding themselves unable to even breathe or move, although said pressure reportedly disappeared as fast as it had came, and the man came here with no resistance. We have no way of knowing if he is dangerous or not, but considering the aura he was able to emit so easily we thought it prudent to bring in powerful adventurers, and you are the only ones level 6 or above currently available."

"Thank you very much, you can return to your work now, I'm sure we can take it from here." I replied, after all, we did not need a guild investigator with us, we knew how to question someone ourselves, and were trusted by the guild, plus, it was impossible to lie to a god, and we had Loki with us.

The guard quickly left to return to his duties, and our group did a little bit of strategizing with the very limited information we had available to us, before walking into the room.

Upon opening the door I quickly took in the surroundings, there was a small room in front of a holding cell, the room itself had a table for us to sit at facing the cell, which we quickly began to walk to, when I suddenly felt like I was being watched, as I whipped my head around to look at the holding cell, I only now noticed the young man inside. 'How did I not see him before?'

It should have been strange to me when I didn't see anyone inside earlier, after all, we were assured that the suspect was in here, yet somehow I glossed over the fact, which was uncharacteristic of me.

I quickly appraised the man's form, just as he did the same to me and my group, the look in his shining maroon eyes like one of a child who just found a new toy, something inexplicable about the way he moved, and the atmosphere of the room, making me feel small.

The man was a cat person, roughly 18 years old by looks alone, although looks were rarely a good indicator of one's age. He wore strange clothing. I had seen clothing of similar design before, but nothing quite like he wore. It covered his entire body, leaving the only exposed skin on his body as his eyes and forehead, as the rest was hidden beneath some strange, shiny black cloth, seemingly metallic, it moved like normal cloth, and contained no visible metal plates, giving off the impression that it was normal clothing, but somehow it gave of the feeling of powerful armor.

The look reminded me of stealth based adventurers, hinting at the man's preferred combat style, as well as the strange looking crossbow and sheathed sword attached to his equally strange backpack.

The atmosphere was tense, as both sides appraised one another, but somehow I felt like I was losing ground, despite no movements from the other party, the way his eyes curled up in amusement when I unconsciously tensed my muscles to be able to react faster should a fight break out, made me incredibly frustrated.

I hated being looked down on, especially due to my small stature as a pallum, and while I knew not if he looked down on me as a pallum, or simply because he was confident in his superior strength, I knew not.

Luckily the tense atmosphere was broken when the man finally spoke. His voice, similar to that of a trained vocalist, was calming and placating, instantly relieving some of the atmosphere's tension, although it hid a distinct sardonic undertone.

"Hey there! Can someone tell me what I did wrong? I just tried to buy some kebabs for fucks sake!"

(an, I honestly don't know where to go from here, so i'm going to end this chapter here, sorry for being gone for so long, I've been incredibly sick for the last few days, to the point that I can't eat anything other than broth, can barely talk, and have terrible headaches, I even had a fever of 39.2 c and almost had to go to the hospital, so yeah, sorry. I'm getting better now, my fever has gone down at least, and I can eat regular food fine, but I still have terrible headaches and can barely speak. So I will return to full updates soon.)
