Chapter 19: Is a Cliche Encounter with a Princess Too Much to Ask for?

After packing up all the loot, Jay was prepared to have a good nap back at the inn. He watched Fen finish the wings he was munching on. Louis handed Fen a piece of cloth for him to wipe his bloody jaws. Fen returned the bloodied cloth after he cleaned his mouth, Louis secretly threw away the piece of cloth after he took it.

Jay stood up and said, "Time to head back." Fen instantly turned around and looked at Jay with pleading eyes, the adrenaline rush when fighting the snake was pure pleasure for a werewolf. Fen wanted to hunt a little bit more. "No, I won't fall for this again, sleeping is much more important," said Jay, yawning. The lazy part of him clearly won the battle here. Jay didn't even bother to head back to the inn, he laid down lazily, using his arm as a rest, be began to drift off into dreamland.

Louis shook his head, speechless of his lazy friend for the umpteenth time. Seeing that Jay wasn't heading back, Fen barked in delight. He grabbed his dagger and was just about to run off. Louis quickly grabbed Fen on his scruff, almost losing his balance due to the powerful strength of the small werewolf. "You sir, are going no where without someone looking after you," scolded Louis. Fen looked and Wen with his big puppy eyes. Wen couldn't help but to follow his little master on his little hunting tree, they set off, running through the trees, tracking down prey. Louis sat down next to the sleeping Jay, and began to work on his skills. During the battle earlier, he found out that he lacked an attack. Sure he can provide support by using his music magic, but other than that, he was useless. So Louis began to play around with his skills, trying to find out if he can someone come up with an attack.

He first tried to directly bombard his target, an small tree, with sounds. He poured a quarter his mana into a single note and attacked the tree. The tree shook, but otherwise then that nothing happened. A quarter of his mana in exchange of a small tree shaking? "I really don't have any attacks... The best I could only do is making the tree vibrate," Louis was a little depressed. "That's it! Vibrations!" a thought came to Louis's mind. He began to slowly make the tree vibrate. At first, most of the sound waves were reflected, but when he slowly increased his pitch, the tree began to slowly vibrate. When his pitch reached a certain frequency, he could feel the tree start to resonate with his voice. As the tree vibrate because of Louis, it suddenly burst into splinters, flying everywhere. Louis celebrated loudly, dancing around and cheering. Jay was still snoring loudly even though a tree just exploded next to him. "Now comes the hard part, how do I only destroy my target, not everyone around me, and how do I find the right frequency fast?" Louis thought. There were still many things to improve on with his newfound attack. He began to test out several plans he had in mind. The one he found that was the most viable plan was to fire several blasts of low volume sounds consecutively, and the ones he could hear echoing back were the ones that were reflected. The one that were absorbed however, were the ones that were the ones that could vibrate the target. After firing these testing shots for two to three times, Louis could find the correct frequency right away. It took him about ten seconds to fire once, so finding out the correct frequency took him about twenty to thirty seconds. He tested out on a couple of targets, testing their frequency, then imploding them into pieces. He found out that his maximum range was about a hundred meters, further than that, the echos of his testing echos couldn't be heard clearly.

[You gained the skill Resonate]

A text suddenly appeared in front of Louis's eyes, indicating that his work had paid off. He was thrilled and sat down to rest. All those testing caused his throat to become insanely sore.

Around dusk Fen and Wen returned, they brought some fangs and pelt of some unknown monsters. "How did it go?" asked Louis, still happy because of his new skill. Fen replied, "Many boars, really yummy!" with drool dripping from his snout. They waited for Jay to wake up as they cleaned the pelts and fangs. Wen was the most efficient, corroding the tissue of the pelt by using Touch of Undead. Fen was the second, gnawing the meat off the bone, but sometimes straight up crunch up the bones, devouring it. Louis washed the blood of the materials by putting them into the water. He resonated the water with an high pitch sound, creating an pseudo-ultrasonic cleaner. A couple of minutes after sunset, Jay woke up. "That was good," he yawned, as he stretched his arms and feet. He looked around and saw the trio sorting out their loot. "Someone has been busy," said Jay, ruffling Fen's fur.

After packing up the loot, they began to head back to the city. The sky was pitch black with no moon, the stars were scarce. Although the forest was silent, they were on full alert. Every small ruffle of leaves, every little movement was scanned by Louis's Song of revealing. A group of people could be seen in the distance. Jay and his group stopped to observe the group, there was a horse-drawn carriage, which seems to be carrying royalty. There was a crest that Jay didn't recognize engraved on the sides. There were also a couple of armed knights, with decent looking armor, protecting the carriage. "They are surrounded," pointed Louis, there were large bats dangling upside down near the carriage, preparing to strike. Jay was conflicted on whether or not he should help. He was tired and wanted to sleep, and they earned enough money from the bandits. Fen didn't seem to care about others who are not his family or friends, and Wen only cared about the people that his master holded dear. The only one conflicted was Louis, who had a kind heart. However he didn't want to burden the group just because of his ideals, so he didn't say anything. But Jay could see the worried expression on Louis's face, he didn't want his best friend to have any trouble sleeping at night, thinking about how he could've saved those people. Having decided on what he would do, Jay stopped the group from advancing further. "We would help if they get in trouble," Jay whispered. Seeing that Jay would help the group, Louis was delighted.

They watched the fate of the passing knights as the meter long bat dropped on a unsuspecting passing knight. The bat sank its fangs deep into the knight's neck, than with a swift turn, completely disconnecting the head from the body, spraying blood everywhere. "Monster attack!" screamed a nearby knight as he pulled out his sword. As the knight focused on the bat, a dog sized creature appeared from nowhere, attacking the knight from behind. The creature looked like a goat with no fur that was crossed with a fox, it had long pointy ears, sharp dangerous looking fangs, muscular limbs, and a long powerful tail. It wrapped its tail around the knight's ankle, tripping him. It then launched itself onto the knight, latching it's long fangs onto the knight. It suck the blood of the knight dry in a couple of seconds, leaving a dry corpse. When the other knights noticed, they rushed over, trying to avenge their fallen comrade. "Sigbin!" a knight yelled. "Be careful, they can go invisible!" The creature, who is known as a sigbin, disappeared from plain sight. Out of the dozen knights, only ten remained. Seeing that the situation was looking good for the knights, Louis, Jay, and Fen rushed into battle. Wen stayed behind, because of Wen's undead appearance, he had a good chance of being identified as an enemy. So to avoid confusion, he stayed behind, watching out for any additional enemies.

"We are here to help," yelled Jay whilehe casted Appraisal.

"Focus on killing the Sigbin first," said Jay, wary of the creatures unbelievable Agility. Jay sensed a tremble near him and brandished his katana. The sigbin appeared and was instanly slashed by Jay. It dodged instanly, by using it's tail to launch itself backwards. The bat swooped down on Jay, trying to decapitate him. Fen activated his skill Beastial mode. He morphed into a werewolf, pouncing on the bat. However, being a rank below the bat, Fen's stats were no match against the bat. With a swipe of its wings, Fen was sent tumbling back. Seeing Fen get hurt angered Jay, two dark wings manifested on his back. He launched a barrage of Feathers of Curses on the bat, inflicting a dozen Curses. However, the Curses were weak against a follower of the Death God. Jay decided to pull the bat down by grabbing on it with Telekinesis. He tried yanking it down from midair, but the bat strongly resisted. The bat opened its mouth and let out a high pitch scream. Louis immediately countered with a similar attack, canceling each other out. The sigbin was surrounded by knights, whipping its long tail around, trying to defend itself. The bat wasn't faring any better, Louis, who was a Bard, was a perfect counter of the bat, which had a keen sense of hearing.

Louis finally found the perfect frequency to resonate the bat. He immediate activated his skill Resonate, making the whole bat tremble. The bat fell from the sky, crashing hard onto the ground. Its ears were bleeding, and parts of its body twisted in weird angles. The knights also finished off the sigbin, slaying it after much effort. After thanking the trio, they quickly went to comfort their master. After a small knock on the carriage door, it swung wide open, revealing a teenage looking boy who was dressed liked a noble. "Useless knights, taking so long to fight weak monsters," said the boy, throwing a small fireball at a knight. He then pointed at Fen and shouted, "How dare demihuman appear in my sight, kill him!"

Feel free to suggest any monsters you would like to see Jay, Louis, or even Arthur and Connor encounter next.
