He wasn't doing it to help or because he was trying to be a good person. Far from it.

Gratitude shouldn't have been shown for that pathetically measly sum for [5] whole constitution points, especially when he would be making triple that amount back from a trade for less. It was why he didn't want to accept his gratitude.

It made him think of his previous self. The one who would work himself to the bone for the newspaper company in gratitude for hiring him. It made him realize why Ryan had been so kind to him, likely because of the effort and competence he had displayed.

These thoughts were the sort that he felt were necessary to have. With each bit of contemplation, it was like he was washing away his naivety.
