1 Powers Rule the World

September 14th, 2048. Itor City, Virtue.

"Powerless."

"Eh?" Lake sat with a blank face at the results.

"Doctor what do you mean? Lake won't have an ability?" his mother asked pale faced.

Sighing he replied, "I'm afraid so ma'am, I'm sorry and it's a pity for a child so talented to have such rotten luck. In terms of his powers, I'm afraid the chances are so low that it's basically impossible for him to awaken his..."

"How low?" a voice asked.

"Eh." The doctor looked at the one who had spoken and it turned out to be Lake.

"I'm sorry?"

Looking up Lake asked once more, "How low are the chances for me to awaken my ability?"

Unsure of how to answer the doctor looked over at Lake's mother Cheryl only to see her nod at him, indicating that he should answer.

"There's no exact measurements, but it's probable that it's less than 1% chance for the awakening to succeed." The doctor watched Lake to see if there were any changes in Lake's expression, unfortunately he couldn't find anything. It was cold and it seemed like he was lost in thought.

Surprised by Lake the doctor lamented, 'This must be a large blow him, an eight year old child usually dreams of becoming a superhero with their powers. And yet before he could even glimpse it, his dream has already been crushed.'

"Thank you doctor, let's go home Lake." After saying so, mother and son stood up and proceeded to walk out of the building.

Throughout the rest of the day Lake didn't speak again. The only change in his expression was a small fire in his eyes, one that looked like it could light the world on fire.

The next day, Mistveil 1st Academy.

"Hey Lake! I heard you got your evaluation yesterday. Do you know what ability you'll have in the future?" asked his friends as they surrounded him.

"Yeah I did, they said I was powerless, that I had a really small chance of awakening."

"Huh? Really?" The group of children were surprised.

Look at each other the group of kids were speechless, their parents told them that only the really unlucky people wouldn't have abilities.

"Oh uh, that's okay Lake, lot's of people don't have abilities. I'm sure you'll do fine."

"Yeah! You'll be fine Lake!"

One after another they tried to console Lake but to him, he wasn't listening to a word they said. Instead he was looking at their faces, and what he saw was something else entirely.

Disdain, sympathy, gloating.

The words they said didn't match their faces at all. Though it looked like they were trying to console him, the line had already been drawn, and Lake was on one side by himself.

Lake was extremely talented, whether it be his energy index, his physical fitness or his mental prowess. They were all top grade for someone his age. Coupled with his good looks, he was very popular in the school.

But it must've been because of that that many people were jealous and envious of him. And the moment the light no longer shone him, was when everything changed.

His talent no longer mattered as there was no point without an ability.

His looks didn't matter because strength was what ruled this world.

He had nothing else to rely on, from that day forward all of his "friends" slowly left him.

"Sorry Lake, I-I'm busy."

"I would but I agreed to go train with Kyle. Sorry Lake."

"Hmph, without an ability you don't deserve to play with us anymore."

"Sorry Lake I can't."

"Sorry Lake."

"Sorry..."

"Sor..."

In the end the only one left was Lake himself. When people spoke about him, the words talented or gifted no longer showed up. It was just trash, useless.

Lake became cold, he no longer spoke to any one except for his mother. His daily routine was to go from school to home, just like that. He didn't interact with anyone, minding his own business while they minded theirs. Ignoring all the voices around him became a habit.

At school he studied, doing his best to stay ahead of everyone in some way. And at home he spent all his time training his body.

Lake continued this way for the next four years of his life. When graduation came he made sure to go to a school where none of his classmates would go.

Hunters 2nd Academy.

A lesser known school, usually someone with grades like Lake could've gone to a higher tiered high school. But just to avoid his classmates he chose a low-tiered school unfitting for him.

And so begins his years in high school.

And so begins his journey.
