Shadow

In the apartment one week later Sam, Sarah and Dean stop their car across and get out, dressed as employees of the alarm system company. Dean gets a toolbox from the trunk of the car and the three of them proceed towards the apartment Sam says "All right Dean and Sarah, this is the place." Dean said "You know, I've gotta say Dad and me did just fine without these stupid costumes, I feel like a high school drama dork." He smiles and says "What was that play that you did? What was it – Our Town. Yeah, you were good, it was cute." Sarah said "I gotta admit you do look good in that costume, might have to do some roleplaying later on." That causes Dean to smile and Sam didn't know what to do and then Sam said "Look, you wanna pull this off or not?" Dean says " I'm just sayin', these outfits cost hard-earned money, okay?" Sarah says "Whose?" Dean said "Ours, You think credit card fraud is easy?"

The three of them arrived at the apartment and Sarah said to the Landlady "Thanks for lettin' us look around." The Landlady says "Well, the police said they were done with the place, so...." Sarah and the landlady move further into the room, dean closes the door and sam notices that the chain is broken on the door and they both follow sarah and the landlady, in the living room Dean spots of blood cover the carpet. The Landlady continues and asks "You guys said you were with the alarm company?" Dean says "That's right." The Landlady said "Well, no offence, but your alarm's about as useful as boobs on a man. Sarah, Sam and Dean exchange a look and then Dean says " Well, that's why we're here and to see what went wrong and stop it from happening again." Sam said "Now ma'am, you found the body?" The Landlady says "Yeah." Sarah asks "Right after it happened?" The Landlady said "No. Few days later, Meredith's work called—she hadn't shown up and I knocked on the door and that's when i noticed the smell." Dean said "Any windows open? Any sign of break-in?" The Landlady says "No, windows were locked, front door was bolted. Chain was on the door, we had to cut it just to get in." Dean asks "And the alarm was on?" The Landlady says "Like I said, bang-up job your company's doin'." Dean said "Mmhmm. You see any overturned furniture, broken glass, signs of struggle?" The landlady shakes her head and then she says "Everything was in perfect condition—except Meredith." Sarah asked "And what condition was Meredith in?" The landlady says "Meredith was all over. In pieces, The guy who killed her must have been some kind of a whackjob. But I tell you, if I didn't know any better, I'd have said a wild animal did it. Dean, Sam and Sarah look at each other and then Sam said "Ma'am, do you mind if we take some time? Give this place a once-over?" The landlady says "Oh, well, go right ahead. Knock yourself out."

Dean opens his toolbox and brings out his EMF Meter and he says "So, a killer walks in and out of the apartment—no weapons, no prints, nothin'." Sam says " I'm tellin' ya, the minute I found that article, I knew this was our kind of gig." The EMF Meter beeps frantically, and Dean says "I think we agrees with you." Sarah nods her head and says "Yeah it does sound like our kinda job." Sam said "So, you talked to the cops?" Dean says with a smirk "Yeah I spoke to Amy, a, uh, charming, perky officer of the law..." But before he could finish what he was about to say sarah gave him a look and he smile vanished he kinda felt bad and then continued and said "Yeah. Uh, nothin' we don't already know. Except for one thing they're keepin' out of the papers." Sam says "Hm?" Dean says "Her heart's missing." Sarah was stunned and so was Sam and sarah said "Her heart?" Dean said "Yeah, her heart." Sam said "So, what do you think did it to her?" Sarah said "Well, the landlady said it looked like an animal attack. Maybe it was—werewolf?" Sam said "No, no werewolf, the lunar cycle's not right. Plus, if it was a creature, it would've left some kind of trace. It's probably a spirit." Dean observes the blood on the carpet and he seems to notice something else Dean asks "See if there's any masking tape around." Sam and Sarah look around the flat for tape and sam finds some and hands it over to dean. Dean uses the masking tape to connect each pool of blood when he is done, the piece of tape from an unusual symbol, and Sam asks "Ever see that symbol before?" Dean says "Never." Sarah says "Me either you sam?" Sam says "No i haven't." They exchange a look.

At the bar Sarah and Dean was sitting at the bar they was flirting with each and order some drinks and then Sam entered the bar and saw the two of them and then he found a booth to sit in Sarah noticed Sam and said to Dean "Sam's here, come on let's go and join him." They take their drinks to the table and sit in front of sam and he asks "Did you get anything?" Sarah says "Look, there's nothing to find out. I mean, Meredith worked here, she waited tables, everyone here was her friend. Everybody said she was normal, she didn't do or say anything weird before she died, so—what about that symbol, you find anything?" Sam said "Nope, nothing. It wasn't in Dad's journal or in any of the usual books. I just have to dig a little deeper, I guess." Dean then said "Well, there was a first victim, right? Before Meredith?" Sam says "Right. Yeah." He pulls out a newspaper clipping concerning the first death, he then continues and says " His name was, uh—his name was Ben Swardstrom." Sam hands them the newspaper clipping and continues "Last month he was found mutilated in his town house. Same deal—the door was locked, the alarm was on." Sarah ask "Is there any connection between the two of them?" Sam said "Not that I can tell—I mean, not yet, at least. Ben was a banker, Meredith was a waitress. They never met, never knew anyone in common—they were practically from different worlds."

Suddenly someone caught Sam's attention and he got up from the table and headed towards the person of course Sarah and Dean looked at each other confused and then they followed Sam with their eyes to see where he was going and he stopped at a table with a girl sitting on her own and she turns around and it's Meg and Sam surprised says "Meg." Meg looks over at Sam and she says "Sam." He stands at the table and Meg says "Sam! Is that you? Oh, my God!" She stands up and they hug, Sam is slightly puzzled after a few seconds they pull away and she asks " What are you doing here?" Sam says "I'm just in town visiting friends." Meg looks around and then she asks "Where are they?" Sam said "Well, they're not here right now, but what about you, Meg? I thought you were goin' to California." Dean and Sarah come up behind Sam, and Meg said "Oh, I did. I came, I saw, I conquered. Oh, and I met what's-his-name, something Michael Murray at a bar." Sam simply said "Who?" Meg says "Oh, it doesn't matter. Anyway, the whole scene got old, so I'm living here for a while." Dean clears his throat loudly but he's ignored and then Sam asks "You're from Chicago?" Meg said " No, Massachusetts—Andover. Gosh, Sam, what are the odds we'd run into each other?" Sam said "Yeah, I know, I thought I'd never see you again." Meg said "Well, I'm glad you were wrong." Sam nods and Dean coughs again, louder this time and it catches megs attention and she says "Dude, cover your mouth." Sam turns around notices Dean and Sarah and he says "Yeah, um, I'm sorry, Meg. This is, uh—this is my brother, Dean and his girlfriend Sarah." Meg was surprised and said "This is Dean?" Dean smiles and sam simply says "Yeah." Dean said " So, you've heard of me?" Meg aimed all of her angry at Dean and she said "Oh, yeah. I've heard of you. Nice—the way you treat your brother like luggage." Both of them look confused and then dean simply said "Sorry?" Meg continued " Why don't you let him do what he wants to do? Stop dragging him over God's green earth." Sam says "Meg, its all right." It went quiet for a few seconds and Dean whistled lowly.

Dean said "Okay, awkward. we're gonna get a drink now." Dean and Sarah left them to it dean giving sam a puzzled look and went to the bar and Meg said "Sam, I'm sorry. It's just—the way you told me he treats you....if it were me, I'd kill him." Sam says "It's alright it means well." Meg said "Well, we should hook up while you're in town." Sam simply said "Yeah." Meg said "I'll show you a hell of a time." Sam said "You know what, that sounds great. Why don't you, uh—why don't you give me your number?" Sam takes out his cellphone and gets ready to input Meg's number and she said "312-555-0143." Sam then said "You know what, I never got your last name." Meg said "Masters." Sam says "Masters?" Meg said "So you better call." Sam simply said "Scout's Honour." Meg said " I hope to see you around, Sam." He smiles and they both go their separate ways.

Exiting the bar Sarah, Dean and Sam walk back to the car and then Dean asked "Who the hell was she?" Sam said "I don't really know. I only met her once. Meeting up with her again? I don't know, man, it's weird." Dean said " And what was she saying? I treat you like luggage? What, were you bitchin' about me to some chick?" Sam said "Look, I'm sorry, Dean. It was when we had that huge fight when I was in that bus stop in Indiana. But that's not important, just listen—" Dean said "Well, is there any truth to what she's saying? I mean, am I keeping you against your will, Sam?" Sam said "No, of course not. Now, would you listen?" Dean says "What?" I think there's somethin' strange going on here, Dean." Dean says " Yeah, tell me about it. She wasn't even that into me." Sarah ignored what dean said she was get a little annoyed with the way he say things sometimes, Sam then said "No, man, I mean like our kind of strange. Like, maybe even a lead." Sarah said "Why do you say that?" Sam says "I met Meg weeks ago, literally on the side of the road. And now, I run into her in some random Chicago bar? I mean, the same bar where a waitress was slaughtered by something supernatural? You don't think that's a little weird?" Sarah says " don't know, random coincidence. It happens." Sam says "Yeah, it happens, but not to us. Look, I could be wrong, I'm just sayin' that there's something about this girl that I can't quite put my finger on." That causes Dean to smirk and then he says "Well, I bet you'd like to. I mean, maybe she's not a suspect, maybe you've got a thing for her, huh?" Sam rolls his eyes and laughs and then dean continues and he says to sam "Maybe you're thinkin' a little too much with your upstairs brain, huh?" Sam then becomes serious again and then he says "Do me a favor. Check and see if there's really a Meg Masters from Andover, Massachusetts, and see if you can't dig anything up on that symbol on Meredith's floor." Sarah said "What are you gonna do?" Sam says " I'm gonna watch Meg." Dean laughing says "Yeah, you are." Sam says " I just wanna see what's what. Better safe than sorry." Dean says "All right, you little pervert." Sarah says "That might be a smart idea Sam, just please be carefully and don't get caught." Sam says "Well at least someone is being sensible and I will." They hug and then Sarah and Dean crosses the street and leaves Sam on his own.

Back at the motel dean is on the laptop looking up research about Meg and Sarah looking up about the symbol and then Dean's cellphone rings and he dials Sam's number. Sam answers it and Sam says "Hey." Dean said "Let me guess. You're lurkin' outside that poor girl's apartment, aren't you?" Sam says "No." Dean waits for his response, Sam rolls his eyes and then he says "Yes." Dean said " You've got a funny way of showin' your affection." Sam said "Did you find anything on her or what?" Dean said "Sorry, man, she checks out. There is a Meg Masters in the Andover phone-book. I even pulled up her high school photo. Now, look, why don't you go knock on her door and, uh, invite her to a poetry reading, or whatever it is you do, huh?"Sam then asked " What about the symbol? Any luck?" I'll pass you the phone to the missus whilst i was doing that she was looking up about the symbol and she's had some luck." Sarah takes the phone off of dean and she says "Hey sam hows it going?" Sam replied "Hey, it's quiet so dean says you've found information about the symbol." Sarah said "Yeah, that I did have some luck with." She looks at the research and says to Sam "It's, uh—turns out it's Zoroastrian. Very, very old school, like two thousand years before Christ. It's a sigil for a Daeva."Sam was confused and he asked "It translates to "demon of darkness". Zoroastrian demons, and they're savage, animalistic, you know, nasty attitudes—kind of like, uh, demonic pit bulls." Sam was impressed and then he said "Well thank you for the help and i'm impressed." Sarah passed the phone back to dean she headed into the bathroom after giving him a kiss on the cheek and of course dean followed her checking her out and then he says to Sam on the phone "Here's the thing—these Daevas, they have to be summoned, conjured." Sam said "So, someone's controlling it?" Dean says "Yeah, that's what I'm sayin'. And, from what I gather, it's pretty risky business, too. These suckers tend to bite the hand that feeds them. And, uh, the arms, and torsos." Sam asked "So, what do they look like?" Dean says "Well, nobody knows, but nobody's seen 'em for a couple of millennia. I mean, summoning a demon that ancient? Someone really knows their stuff. I think we've got a major player in town. Now, why don't you go give that girl a private strip-o-gram?" Sam not impressed by what Dean just said simply says back "Bite me." Dean had a remark and he said "No, bite her. Don't leave teeth marks, though—" Before he could finish that sentence sam hanged up the phone and Dean said "Sam? Are you—?" He hangs up his own phone and sighs and back at the car Sam glances back up at Meg, a few seconds later a light goes on in Meg's bedroom, wearing a black lace bra. Sam looks around uncomfortably, then continues to watch Meg she puts on a T-shirt. SAM is interrupted by someone clearing their throat. He turns and sees a woman standing outside the car, looking annoyed. She gestures to the window." Sam says "Oh, no, no, no, I'm just—" She simply said "Pervert." She left angrily meg came out of her flat in different clothes she looked over at the car but sam had hidden himself and then she left and he reappeared, got out of the car and then he followed her.

On the street Meg stops at a graffiti-covered wall, she looks around before she pulls open the door which seems to be apart of the wall and when she goes inside Sam peers out from behind a building. He also walks to the wall and enters through the camouflaged door. In side the warehouse he enters and walks up a flight of stairs when he reaches a door at the top , which he attempts to open, but it is locked. He looks around and sees a broken down elevator gate. He enters the gate and begins to climb the side of it, using different bars as footrests, when he reaches the top, he is able to peer through the gate into a dimly lit room. There is a black altar in the middle of the room Sam sees Meg enter and walk over to the altar, he keeps watching silently while hanging on to the bars of the gate, when Meg reaches the altar and picks up a silver bowl filled with blood. She swirls her finger around in the liquid and speaks an incantation in an ancient language. She then begins to speak to someone that Sam couldn't hear.

Meg talking to the blood she was swirling says "I don't think you should come. (...) Because the brothers, they're in town, I didn't know that—(...) Yes, sir. (...) Yes, I'll be here—waiting for you. (SAM looks confused. MEG sets down the bowl and blows out the candles at the altar, then leaves the room. Once she is gone, SAM moves to the wall, where there is a space through which he can crawl. He hoists himself up and climbs into the room. SAM walks to the altar and observes it. He sees several human hearts on the table, along with other ancient items. In the middle of the altar is the Zoroastrian symbol, drawn in blood. Sam whispers to himself "What the hell---?" Sam enters the Motel and Sarah and Dean are sitting at the table and Sam says "I gotta talk to you both." Sometime later and Dean says "So, hot little Meg is summoning the Daeva?" Sam says "Looks like she was using that black altar to control the thing." Dean said "So, Sammy's got a thing for the bad girl." He chuckles and both Sam and Sarah roll their eyes and then dean asks "And what's the deal with that bowl again?" Sam said "She was talking into it. The way witches used to scry into crystal balls or animal entrails. She was communicating with someone." Sarah asks "With who? With the Daeva?" Sam said " No, you said those things were savages. No, this was someone different. Someone who's giving her orders. Someone who's comin' to that warehouse" Dean thinks for a minute and then he looks over at some files on the table and he goes through them and he simply says "Holy Crap." Sam said "What?" Dean said "What I was gonna tell you earlier—I pulled a favor with my –" He clears his throat and says "Amy, over at the police department. The complete records of the two victims—we missed something the first time." Sam says "What." He joins the two of them at the table and sits down Dean says "The first victim, the old man—he spent his whole life in Chicago, but he wasn't born here. Look where he was born." He points to the location and sam says "Lawrence, Kansas." Dean says "Mhmm." He picks up the second file and says "Meredith, second victim—turns out she was adopted. And guess where she's from." The Paper reads Kansas, Lawrence and Sam says "Holy crap." Dean simply says "Yeah."

Sam said "I mean, it is where the demon killed Mom. That's where everything started. So, you think Meg's tied up with the demon?" Dean said "I think it's a definite possibility." Sam said "But I don't understand. What's the significance of Lawrence? And how do these Daeva things fit in? Dean says "Beats me. But I say we trash that black altar, grab Meg, and have ourselves a friendly little interrogation." Sam said "No, we can't. We shouldn't tip her off. We've gotta stake out that warehouse. We've gotta see who, or what, is showin' up to meet her." Dean said " I'll tell you one thing. I don't think we should do this alone." Dean is leaving a message on John's voicemail. While he is talking, Sarah is getting dressed in other clothes and Sam enters the room with bags full of weapons. Dean says on the phone to the voicemail "We think we've got a serious lead on the thing that killed Mom. So, uh, this warehouse—it's 1435 West Erie. Dad, if you get this, get to Chicago as soon as you can." He hangs up and Sam says "Voicemail?" Dean says "Yeah." He then gestures to the bag on the bed and he says to sam "Jesus, what'd you get?" He chuckles and says "I ransacked that trunk. Holy water, every weapon that I could think of, exorcism rituals from about a half dozen religions. I'm not sure what to expect, so I guess we should just expect everything." Dean nods, and they begin loading their guns silently."

Dean said "Big Night." Sam says "Yeah. You nervous?" Dean says "No. Why, are you?" Sam said "No. No way." The three of them was silent for a few minutes and then sam continues "God, could you imagine if we actually found that damn thing? That demon?" Dean said "Let's not get ahead of ourselves, all right?" Sam says "I know. I'm just sayin', what if we did? What if this whole thing was over tonight? Man, I'd sleep for a month. Go back to school—be a person again." Dean said "You wanna go back to school?" Sam says " Yeah, once we're done huntin' the thing." Dean said "Huh, what about you sarah what would you want to do if this is over?" Sarah said "I'd probably want to continue fighting monsters really." Sam was surprised and said "Wow, thought you'd want to go back to school as well." Dean said "You and Me fighting monsters together i like the sound of that but of course i want Sam there."

At the warehouse Sam, Sarah and Dean climb the elevator gate and reach the top room. Meg is standing at the altar, speaking in an ancient language. Sam, Dean and Sarah somehow squeeze through the space between the gate and the wall. They draw their guns and move to the other side of the room, hiding behind some crates. Meg says "Guys and Girl."The three of them look at each other stunned and Meg continues and says " Hiding's a little bit childish, don't you think?" Dean said "Well, that didn't work out like I planned." Meg turns to face them and she says "Why don't you come out?" They come out from behind the crates and she continues with "Sam, I have to say, this puts a real crimp in our relationship." Sam said "Yeah, tell me about it." Dean asked "So, where's your little Daeva friend?" Meg says "Around. You know, that shotgun's not gonna do much good." Sarah said " Oh, don't worry, sweetheart. The shotgun's not for the demon." Sam said "So, who is it, Meg? Who's coming? Who are you waiting for?" Meg simply said "You." The shadow demon begins to form on the wall it knocks Sam to the ground and throws Dean into the crates and throws Sarah across the room a claw scratch appears on Sam's face.

Dean, Sam and Sarah are tied to three separate posts, Sam comes to and sees Meg sitting before him and Dean said "Hey, Sam? Don't take this the wrong way, but your girlfriend...is a bitch." Sam looked over at Meg and he said "his, the whole thing, was a trap. Running into you at the bar, following you here, hearin' what you had to say. It was all a set-up, wasn't it?" Meg just laughs and sam continues and says " And that the victims were from Lawrence?" Meg says "It doesn't mean anything. It was just to draw you in, that's all." Sam said "You killed those two people for nothin'." Meg said "Baby, I've killed a lot more for a lot less." Dean said "You trapped us. Good for you. It's Miller time." He smiles and continues "But why don't you kill us already?" Meg said "Not very quick on the uptake, are we?" She leans closer and says "This trap isn't for you." Sarah and Dean are both puzzled and Sam thinks for a second and then it clicks and he says "Dad. It's a trap for Dad." Dean looks at Meg who's smiling at him, Dean says "Oh, sweetheart—you're dumber than you look. 'Cause even if Dad was in town, which he is not, he wouldn't walk into something like this. He's too good." Meg said "He is pretty good. I'll give you that." She walks over to him and sits down, straddling his legs and that really annoys sarah and she was about to say something but Dean said "What's that?" Meg said "You. He lets his guard down around his boys, lets his emotions cloud his judgement. I happen to know he is in town. And he'll come and try to save you and then the Daevas will kill everybody—nice and slow and messy." Dean said "Well, I've got news for ya. It's gonna take a lot more than some....shadow to kill him." Meg said "Oh, the Daevas are in the room here—they're invisible. Their shadows are just the only part you can see." Sam asked Meg " Why you doin' this, Meg? What kind of deal you got worked out here, huh? And with who?" Meg said to Sam "I'm doing this for the same reasons you do what you do—loyalty. Love. Like the love you had for Mommy—and Jess." Sarah says "Go to Hell Meg for the sake of my sister." She looks over at Sarah and she says "Wow i can see why dean's into you angry little girl aren't we." Dean says "Leave her alone, she's nothing to do with this."

Meg said "Baby, I'm already there." She then slides over to Sam and continues " Come on, Sam. There's no need to be nasty." She leans in and whispers in his ear "I think we both know how you really feel about me. You know, I saw you watching me—changing in my apartment. Turned you on, didn't it?" Dean said "Get a room, you two." They ignored what dean had said and Meg continued and she said " I didn't mind. I liked that you were watching me. Come on, Sammy. You and I can still have a little dirty fun." She begins kissing his neck and Sam says " You wanna have fun? Go ahead then. I'm a little tied up right now." She smiles and continues to kiss him, a noise on Dean's side of the room makes her stop she gets up and walks behind Dean's post, She sees he has a knife in his hand and she takes it away and tosses it into a corner, Meg swings around to the other side of the post, and smiles at Dean, who chuckles guilty she slides back over at sam and she says "Now, were you just trying to distract me while your brother cuts free?" Sam said "No. No. That's because I have a knife of my own." That confused Meg and he breaks free from his ropes and grabs Meg's shoulders then knocks his head against hers. She falls to the floor while he groans in pain.

Dean shouts to sam "Get the Altar." Sam walks over to the altar and overturns it. Suddenly, the shadow demon appears and grabs Meg, She is dragged across the floor and crashes through the window, falling down to the street below. Sam grabs his knife and goes over to dean and sarah and unties them both, the three of them head out of the building and sees that meg is on the floor bleeding and she's dead. Sam says "So, I guess the Daevas didn't like being bossed around." Dean said " Yeah, I guess not. Hey, Sam?" Sam said "Hm." Sarah said "Next time you wanna get laid, find a girl that's not so buckets-o'-crazy, huh?" He smiles and the three of them walk away and head back to the car.

In the motel hallway Sam, Sarah and Dean who are holding hands and Dean says "Why didn't you just leave that stuff in the car?" Sam said " said it before, and I'll say it again—better safe than sorry." Dean unlocks the door and they enter the room. They see the outline of a man standing by the window. Dean protects Sarah and says "Hey!" Sam turns on the light and the man turns around it's John both Sam and Dean are surprised and stunned, he says "Dad?" John says "Hey boys." Dean and John walk towards each other and share a long, emotional hug. Sam watches sadly dean and john pull apart and he looks over at Sam and Sarah and he says to Sam "Hi Sam." Sam and John do not hug, but look at each other, Sam places the bag full of weapons on the floor. Dean said "Dad, it was a trap. I didn't know, I'm sorry." John said "It's all right. I thought it might've been." Dean said "I want to introduce you to someone." Sarah walks next to dean and he holds her hand and he says "This is Sarah Moore, Jessica's sister and my girlfriend." They smile at each other and then John said "Hey, i am sorry about your sister and i hope my boys have been looking after you?" Sarah said "Yes sir, they've been very supportive and have protected me and thank you i'm sorry for you, losing your wife these two talk about her alot she sounds like an amazing woman." He smiles and then Dean asks " Were you there?" John said "Yeah, I got there just in time to see the girl take the swan dive. She was the bad guy, right?" Dean and Sam said at the same time "Yes, Sir." John said "Good. Well, it doesn't surprise me. It's tried to stop me before." Sam says "The demon has?" John says "It knows I'm close. It knows I'm gonna kill it. Not just exorcise it or send it back to hell—actually kill it." Dean says "How?" John smiles and he says "I'm workin' on that." Sam says "Let us come with you. We'll help." Dean gives Sam a warning look and John says "No, Sam. Not yet. Just try to understand. This demon is a scary son of a bitch. I don't want you caught in a crossfire. I don't want you hurt." Sam said "Dad, you don't have to worry about us." John said "Of course I do. I'm your father." He pauses and then he continues and says " Listen, Sammy, last time we were together, we had one hell of a fight." Sam says "Yes, Sir." John says "It's good to see you again. It's been a long time." Sam says "Too long." He and John embrace, crying. A minute later, they pull apart. The three of them look around tearfully. Suddenly, the shadow demon attacks John He is thrown into a set of cabinets and falls to the ground. Sam also falls and so does sarah and dean says "No!" He is thrown to the floor as well. Outside, Meg is watching the apartment. She looks at the building while holding a pendant around her neck, which features the Zoroastrian symbol.

Back at he motel room Sarah, Dean, Sam and John are still being attacked by the shadow demon. They groan and scream in pain as they are flung around the room, Fresh scratches appear on their faces. Sam makes his way to the bag of weapons on the floor he removes a flare from the bag and sam says "Shut your eyes! These things are shadow demons, so let's light 'em up!" He lights the flare, and the room is instantly filled with smoke and a brilliant white light, The shadow demon vanishes. The four of them of them try to feel their way around the room, coughing and sputtering and Dean shouts "Dad, Sarah." John says "We're over here" He makes his way to John and Sarah who's holding up John and Dean helps and heads outside followed by Sam with the bags of guns. They all exit the building and walk down an alley to the car, Sam puts the bag in the backseat of the car and he says "All right, come on. We don't have much time. As soon as the flare's out, they'll be back." Dean said "Wait, wait, wait! Sam, wait. Dad, you can't come with us." Sarah gets in the car leaves them to get on with it and not get involved and Sam says "What? What are you talkin' about?" John said "You boys—you're beat to hell." Dean said "We'll be all right." Sam said "Dean, we should stick together. We'll go after those demons—." Dean said " Sam! Listen to me! We almost got Dad killed in there. Don't you understand? They're not gonna stop. They're gonna try again. They're gonna use us to get to him. I mean, Meg was right. Dad's vulnerable when he's with us. He—he's stronger without us around." Sam said "Dad--no." He puts a hand on his father's shoulder Dean watches sadly and sam continues and says "After everything-- after all the time we spent lookin' for you—please. I gotta be a part of this fight." John said " Sammy, this fight is just starting. And we are all gonna have a part to play. For now, you've got to trust me, son." Sam shakes his head no and John continues and says "Okay, you've gotta let me go." All three of them are silent for a moment, close to tears. Finally, Sam looks at his hand on his dad's shoulder, and then pats his father's shoulder once, then lets go. John and Dean share a look, then John walks to his truck. Once there, he looks back at them one more time and says "Be careful, boys." He gets in his truck and drives away, Dean says "Come on" He and Sam get into the car and watch as their father's truck turns the corner, Dean and Sam look at each other knowingly. Without a word, Dean starts the car. He backs into the street, then speeds down the road and around a corner, Meg comes onto the street from a flight of stairs. She turns and watches the boys leave.
