"Are you my opportunity?" Jonathan asked.
"If you wish to think of me as such, then I can be," the lantern bearer replied. The lantern bearer said. "I merely appeared before you, as a reminder." The paths you ought to take, you have completed. The deeds you ought to do, you have fulfilled. I am a lesson from those before you, I came to remind you not to make mistakes...A chance to try and err comes rarely. I have already walked that errant path."
He said: "It is called a path because others have walked it before. You shouldn't take the path I walked; as for other paths, I don't know if they are right, but I believe you should try to blaze your own."
"Is this advice from someone who's been there?" Jonathan murmured.
"Yes," the lantern bearer closed his eyes slightly. "I've reached the end, but perhaps you should try taking a different turn."
"Are you an incarnation of Melville?" Jonathan asked. "So you are just him... a part of him?"
