Jonathan didn't have many "ports" at home. The only electronic device he had that could connect to the "net" was a smartphone. However, when he looked up, he saw that the walls of his house were hiding "nets" and "lines" that transported data.
The old complex where he lived had undergone wall renovation a few years ago. Many lines were hidden in the walls, and optical cables were installed on the exterior walls of the building.
Jonathan withdrew his consciousness from the phone and tried to directly connect his consciousness to the "net" within the optical cable without going through an electronic device, but he failed.
He made a note: consciousness can only connect to the "net" of the data world through "doors" or "ports." If there are no "doors" or "ports," then he's like standing in front of a mall but blocked by a glass door; he can't go "shopping" no matter what.
