Not Giving Up

Joan and Steve both stood staring into each other's eyes. 

"Jo, I want you to look me in the eye and tell me that you no longer love me. Tell me you no longer feel anything for me, and I will sign these papers right now," Steve held Joan's eyes with his.

"Ayo, I....."

Joan couldn't bring herself to say what he was asking because she still loved him. She loved him more than she could fathom. A tear came down her cheek, and she started crying.

Steve lovingly wrapped his arms around her and placed her head against his chest. "I'm sorry, babe, please don't cry," Steve said in a calm voice.

Joan removed her head from his chest. Sniffling, she said, "I don't want to make the same mistake that my mom made." 

"What are you talking about?" Steve asked her, confusion written on his face.

"You know what I'm talking about, Ayo."

"No, I don't, so please tell me."
