Chapter 28. Funny

"It's been a while since I last saw you. How have you been?" Nathan asked Laura.

"Fine si..r". Laura uttered wondering what he was doing there

"Oh! Call me Nate. No need for the formalities". Nathan said jovially to her.

"Okay," Laura said politely. "If I may ask what are you doing here?" because she was sure that he wasn't there for Jason.

"To pick you up" he replied.

"But.. I thought Russ..."

"He's not coming. Mrs. Hughes asked me to pick you up instead. So.... are you ready?" He asked her.

"Just give me a minute," she said to him before going back to pick up her things.

"Are you going with him?" Kate asked her.

"Yes"

"I can't believe you'll be sitting in the same car with Nathan ". Kate said excitedly. "He's so handsome and rich. He's the most handsome guy I've ever seen" she added with dreamy eyes.

"Wait! I thought you said Jason was the most handsome guy you've ever seen?" Laura asked her with one eyebrow arched.

"Well, since he's been taken by my best friend I thought I should find someone else to fill the gap".

"Whatever," Laura said before rushing off to meet Nathan.

Everyone kept whispering after seeing Laura and Nathan walk out together.

Laura was surprised when saw Nathan entering a red Lamborghini that was parked outside.

"Is he that rich?". Laura though. She was also excited to have this opportunity to sit inside Lamborghini. She quietly got into the car and put on her seat belt.

The car instantly moved the moment she was done with the seat belt. Laura was shocked out of her wit.

"Can't you just wait for a bit? Do want to kill me?" Laura ranted out the moment she pulls herself together.

"Woah! I never knew you had a sharp tongue" Nathan said looking impressed.

"Well, you can't expect me to keep quiet when you just nearly gave me a heart attack," Laura said looking displeased.

"Okay I'm sorry "

"Thank you," Laura said and they both kept quiet not knowing what to say to each other.

"So... how was your day?" Nathan tried to start a conversation.

"Good"

"That girl, is she your friend?" Nathan asked her.

"Which girl?" Laura asked him back wondering who he was referring to.

"The one you were talking to before coming with me. If I must say, she's kind of pretty" Nathan said smiling from ear to ear.

"Sorry to disappoint you, she already has a boyfriend," Laura said straightforwardly.

"Well... I wasn't going to... you know " Nathan said awkwardly. Being a playboy, he always took note of the ladies. Although Kate wasn't as pretty as Laura, she has some feats any man would die for.

"Be honest, that's where you were heading to"

"Okay you caught me so what? Can you at least tell me her name?".

"Jees. Why are you getting worked up about it? By the way, you're not her type," Laura said straight up to his face.

"What do you mean by that? I'm every girl's type. How can you say that? Didn't you see the way she was looking at me?". Nathan said with pride.

"Yes, but not the way you think....." The car suddenly stopped interrupting her.

"Why are we stopping?" Laura asked confused.

"This is our destination"

"Oh". Laura exclaims before she opens the door. Laura have been so preoccupied with their conversation earlier that she did not pay attention to her surrounding.

When Laura finally came out of the car a whole new world welcome her sight.

The compound was huge. There was a garden by the side and a fountain at the center of the compound making a runabout leading to different sides of the compound. The security was very tight that Laura thought that she was at the president's house. Laura took a deep breath to calm her nerves. After making sure she was calm, Laura follow Nathan into the mansion.

She was surprised to see inside of the house, it was beyond words. Most of the furnitures was made of gold except for the chairs which were all white and a big chandelier hanging on the ceiling. There was a huge staircase leading straight to the second floor.

"How many people live in this house?" Laura was forced to ask.

"Just Mrs Hughes and a few help" Nathan replied while sitting down.

"You mean she lives here all by herself?"

"Yes, but....." Nathan was unable to finish his sentence before he heard Mrs. Hughes's voice.

"Oh! Laura, you're finally here" Mrs Hughes said while coming down the stairs.

"Mrs Hughes," Laura said turning around to face her.

"I've missed you so much" Mrs. Hughes pulled her into a hug.

"Me too," Laura said pulling out of the hug.

"How have been? You look more thinner than I last time I saw you " she said observing Laura from head to toe. "What has Jason been doing all these while?"

"I'm fine. I think l look a lot better since we last met "

"No no. This won't do " she said shaking her head.

"But I'm.."

"Are you guys done playing mother and daughter? Cause I feel left out" Nathan said with a grumpy face making the two ladies burst into laughter.

"You don't have to feel left out my sweet little boy," Mrs said pulling Nathan's two cheeks.

"I'm no longer a little boy Mrs. Hughes, please stop. This is embarrassing" But Mrs. Hughes only pulled harder cause she found it funny seeing his reactions. Meanwhile, Laura was laughing behind Mrs. Hughes.

"Are you going to show her to her room or just make her stand there?". Nathan said making Mrs Hughes finally pull away from him.

"Oh! I'm sorry my dear, please follow me" Mrs Hughes said to Laura.

"I think I should be heading home now, " Nathan said standing up.

"Why?" Mrs. Hughes turned to look at him.

"You know it's getting late " he replied.

"So you're running away from me so you can go to some club?" Mrs. Hughes said with an obvious look.

"That.... not..." Nathan scratches the back of his head in embarrassment.

"Please get a hold of yourself, Nathan, you can stay one night without a woman".

"Please ma I need to go it's something important " Nathan pleaded with her and he heard a chuckle from Laura.

"Is this funny to you?" Nathan said turning to Laura.

"Sorry, don't mind me please carry on" Laura waved him off.

"If it's important then you can leave, " Mrs Hughes said to Nathan.

"Thank you. thank you very much " Nathan said before fleeing away from them.

When he was out of sight, Mrs. Hughes then turned to Laura.

"Please go ahead, your room is the third door to your left. I need to get some things done. Please go and freshen up, you must be tired"

"Okay ma'am," Laura said before going up to the stairs.
