1 Chapter 1: State Governor Charles Warren

Charles Warren ruffled through his long blond hair as he looked through his documents. His light blue eyes scanned each and every word as he continued to work on his never-ending pile of assignments.

*Sigh*

Such is the life of a State Governor. Charles Warren is the current State Governor in the Western District located in State Ferron. His job is simple, govern the area, expand his military, keep a positive income, and most importantly, keep the citizens happy.

The mid-30-year-old looked up to the dusty ceiling in his office. "Just a few more hours and I'll be home free."

On any other day Charles would be hard at work ensuring the prosperity of his state, except for today. He was informed that his wife happened to be pregnant with his first child. The man was eager to go home and learn more about the situation.

"GOVERNOR CHARLES THERE IS AN EMERGENCY"

A young Brunette girl stormed into the office with an extremely worried look on her face. Sophia Brown, a lively, and active 16-year-old girl and Charles' current assistant. She was at the top of her class last year excelling in magic, something most people in Ferron usually struggle with.

Charles adjusted his body, straightened his posture and looked at the worried girl.

"Why? What's going on?" During times like these, a leader must be strong willed and composed. Luckily for Charles, he happened to be comfortable in situations like this.

"Low Class Demons have appeared just outside the border and are currently preparing to attack!!"

Low Class!? Charles tried to hold back his laugh as he looked at his angry assistant. "It's odd that they've been able to materialize this close to the border, but there's no reason to be afraid of grade 1 demons. They are the weakest amongst demons; we have the forces necessary to kill them."

Sophia gave Charles a look of disbelief which then became a look of disappointment. "Clearly you haven't been paying much attention to your job" the girl took a deep breath before continuing. "If I remember correctly, there is a massive expedition that is currently going on. Over 75% of our levies are currently unusable leaving us with just a bunch of young, inexperienced trainees"

Shit. Charles cursed underneath his breath as his memories of the past few days came popping back into his head. State Ferron was currently lacking Demon Crystals, red orbs similar in color to that of a ruby. These shards are used to power the many machinery and gear that Ferron possess.

"What are we supposed to do? Gather the towns people and form a militia?" Charles' began to run different scenario's in his head, each with a negative outcome.

"They are only Low-Class Demons, right?" Sophia said mimicking what her superior had said earlier. "The best solution is for you to support the troops we have. Just having you there would most likely raise moral."

Currently, nothing is going Charles' way. All he wanted to do was to go home and rest along side his wife. Unfortunately, that wasn't an option.

"Okay then, I guess that settles it. Prepare a car we need to get there as soon as possible."

Sophia flinched, "Sorry Governor Warren but we have no available vehicles because of the expedition". Currently, during State Ferron's industrialization era, cars are a luxury that only the military can afford.

"That's fine" Charles' hid his anger as he came up with a solution. "Bring a Carriage with the fastest and healthiest horses we have available."

"Yes sir" Sophia took off down the dimly lit hallway forgetting to close the door on her way out.

"Damn. I hate it when people don't close doors after they leave." However, that was the least of his issues. Charles now had to defend his home state with very little resources. There's no way I'm going to allow the Western District to become a laughingstock. No General alive has ever lost to Low-Class Demons. Charles' wasn't planning on being the first.

Charles' left his gloomy office and proceeded down the dark hallway heading towards the exit of the dimly lit building. He put on his fedora and tied his leather shoes in a tight knot before exiting the building.

The Western District looked as gloomy as ever. The sky was gray, reminding Charles' just how horrible his day has been thus far. Charles' headed towards the parking area behind his office. The streets were filled with busy civilians heading towards their destinations.

"Good morning Mr. Warren" many people greeted the man as he walked past them.

Charles finally turned the corner and arrived in the empty parking lot.

"Tch. Sophia still hasn't arrived with the wagon." Charles grumbled as he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes. After picking out one of the cigarettes, he took out his lighter and tried lighting his cigar, burning his finger in the process.

"Damn can today get any worse?!" after 30 minutes, Sophia finally showed up with the wagon.

"Governor Charles' its time to go" Charles had gotten pretty comfortable sitting on the cold pavement but stubbornly got up and headed towards the wagon boarding the passenger seat.

"Where to guys?" Charles was so busy being pissed that he didn't even realize that an overweight man was sitting in the driver's seat, not a trained military horseman.

"WHAT THE HELL??? WHO IS THIS FUCK?" Charles' had completely lost his cool and was yelling hysterically at Sophia.

"Sorry Governor Charles but there were no more military provided carriages, so we had to rent this one" So that's why she took so long. Charles took a deep breath and took out one of his last cigarettes. Today… will hopefully not get any worse.
