The invitation

I sighed as I sat there with the envelope in my hand, i twirled the square over and over as I waited to open it. I knew what was in it, the save the date was on my fridge but it still made me hesitate to open. I knew Karen went through a lot of work to make it perfect, everything she did had to be perfect because if one thing was wrong then she would turn into a diva.

That was how she had always been, a diva with an attitude if she didn't get her way, I chuckled at that thought. I grew up with Karen, I met her in high school along with her boyfriend that was on again, off again and imagine this, they are to be married. Jason and I were close, closer than I am Karen after an incident at school, after that Karen and I grew apart. We were no longer as close as we once were, that was fine but it was awkward to be honest when it was just the two of us. Jason was the only one from high school that stood by me and helped me deal with the issues at school. I remember wandering the halls alone, classes went by slow and I hated every minute of it. I was a loner that last year of high school and every second made me hate being there, even graduation was awkward and weird, I felt even more alone in a sea of people.

I knew if I went to the wedding there would be some people I knew from school there but I knew I had to put it past me to move on. It had been 10 years since then, 10 years since high school, crazy that it all went by so fast. I opened the envelope to a million sparkles and glitter, and I groaned at it because glitter stuck to everything.

…..

You have been invited to the wedding of

Karen Marks and Jason Smith

Location: Honolulu Hawaii

When: January 23, 2023

Time: 5pm

Wedding is all inclusive as long as the itinerary attached is followed. Each day is mapped out with times and events that we have scheduled.

…..

I snorted as I rolled my eyes, of course she would make it where she controlled every second of every day for her big day. It was a two week event with the wedding in the middle, I thought about it seeing as it could be a holiday for myself. Obviously I would have to cover certain things but to know the flight, food and hotel were covered was helpful. I knew it would be nice to go, to get away from the city and be able to relax on the beach. I would go, even though I didn't feel up to being a part of her little army she thought she could control. I needed to get a dress as the dress code was written in big bold black letters, meaning she wanted you to follow it.

I decided to go to the mall now instead of waiting until last minute and so I got up, got dressed and headed out.

It was while I was pulling out of the garage that my phone rang and I saw a familiar name flash on the screen.

"Hello." I said as I looked behind me, the driveway disappearing under the car as I backed up. I clicked the remote and the garage door shut as I turned onto the road.

"What are you doing?" His voice cut through the speaker.

"Heading to the mall." I said.

"For Karen and Jason's wedding?"

"Yes, I need to get a dress." I said as I merged onto the highway and headed the few minutes to the local mall.

"I'll meet you there." Was all his said and then the line went dead. I didn't have to tell him which mall for he knew me to well to go to the wrong one. Brandon. That was who was on the phone, he was my best friend of years. We did everything together when we weren't at work, it also didn't surprise me that he was invited. Jason and Brandon were close so it made sense as to why he would be invited to the wedding.

It didn't take me long to find a parking spot, park and walk inside. I blinked for a moment to allow my eyes to adjust to the light difference from the sun to the lights above my head. I texted Brandon where I was and headed inside to start my search for the perfect dress.
