"Want to walk around for a little bit?" I ask, running my fingers over Vanessa's knuckles, reluctant to part from her touch for even as long as it takes to get out of the car separately.

"Sure." Her smile is a little shaky, revealing how nervous she is about what we are facing.

Is taking her to Matvey's the best thing? This is the question that will continue to haunt me until everything is over. I am trusting Luka more than I have ever trusted anyone, because this woman is precious to me. Once we walk through those doors of my uncle's home, I won't have complete control over the situation. As much as I would like to believe I can control what happens, it's just not possible. 

I meet Vanessa at the passenger's side of the vehicle, but instead of walking through the woods, I take her in my arms, nuzzle into her neck, breathe in her scent. Soft laughter feathers against me, but she wraps her arms around my shoulders and plays with my hair.
