Chapter 10: Questions and Answers

“How did you find me?” Vix asked. It seemed as good a place as any to start.

“Just lucky chance, really,” Caine answered. “I happened to catch sight of you last night.”

“You mean before you were attacked? Or after?”

Caine suddenly became very interested in examining his fingernails.

Vix took a deep breath and prepared herself to ask the real question she had been building to. “About what happened four days ago... and last night...”

“No,” Caine overrode her immediately.

“What?”

“You’re in enough danger already. The more you know, the worse it will be for you.” He gave her a searching look. “Did he hurt you?”

Vix was so surprised by the sudden change in topic that she didn’t protest. “Did who hurt me?”

“The Riverman – that man from last night.”

Vix suppressed a shudder at the memory. “I’ve never heard of him. Who is he?”
