Chapter 34: Strange Carnivores

After a couple more glasses of wine, I allowed Bubba to show me to his room. He was going to sleep on the couch. Diana parked herself at the foot of the bed. Even in my blurred state I knew that nothing was going to get past her.

I dreamed of vampires.

Actually one vampire. His name was Francisco Medea and he'd explored with Juan Ponce de Leon. Francisco spoke lovely Spanish that somehow I could understand. He'd been waiting for me for five hundred years. I was his soulmate, his completion. We walked through a sunlit forest.

"You have nothing to fear," he said. "Give yourself to me and we will be together for eternity." His thumb rubbed the inside of my wrist and my breathing quickened. His fingers fastened in my hair and tilted my head back. I waited for the pain of his fangs in my neck, but strangely I felt them in my arm. "Come." Francisco was getting annoyed. I didn't want him angry at me, but I had to wonder why he was biting my arm.
