Jacob took another day off from work. He said his boss was starting to get a little irritated at him, but I wanted him with me, and he wanted to come.

Jacob had previously explained to me the baffling way the country's political system worked. In Prandia and most other countries around it, the king had the sole authority to make laws and pass decrees and judgments. That power was limited by the knowledge that if he made a decision those underneath him wouldn't obey, he would be undermining his own power, and if those under him couldn't tolerate his decisions, he would be fomenting rebellion. If the king was a rider, then the nation was the horse. If he abused the horse or overburdened it, it might throw him off.
